Anyone care to post up a linkie to that Telegraph article purlease? ('Twill certainly be lost to future readers of this thread otherwise - and might be lost to me now...but I'll go and try to find it....).
EDIT: Just managed to find it - well...i wouldnae go so far as to do counting of sheets on loo-rolls or removing of batteries....life is too short. First time I've tried clicking directly on the Finance section to see what lurks there and thought "I shall visit that bit of the website again - found a good "take" there on financial news generally" - so my visit wasnt wasted..0 -

Me neither. Although I did count how many I used in a week, approximately, and it's a lot. Must get out more (and use someone else's) :rotfl: Here's the link to the page but it's not what you might call investigative journalism. OSers could wipe the floor with it, although if you have a paper copy, cut it up into small squares and hang it in the loo, it'll save you counting next time you're in there.0 -
I had a look at the Telegraph newspaper online today and in thier finance section they have an article dissing frugality. It assumes all are frugal because they are mean, rather than being so out of necessity and totally miss the point that saving funds on basic necessities actually leaves more for the nice things in life. I'd love Martin to write in and counter thier arguments - any idea how to get his attention? MARTIN can you hear me????!!!!
Well, quite!!!!
It wasn't really discussing frugality, though, was it? The "reporter" did use the word frugal once, but only as a euphemism for stingy bu99ers!
I don't see how not leaving tips in restaurants or not giving to charity are "frugal" things. If you're eating out, you've got money to spend. If you don't leave a tip when you can afford to eat out, then you're just lacking in manners (or receiving appalling service)! Similarly, I happen to feel that giving to charity is important and that there are always people worse off than me, so donations to various "good causes" is part of my budget even though I am quite frugal on the whole. That's not an area I would cut back on necessarily (although I might need to reduce the amount I can afford to give). The people they spoke to were obviously just self-centred tight gits! And, as one of the commenters pointed out, who needs to count loo roll when the number of squares is printed on the packet?
Obviously a slow day in Torygraph land. And they are quoting from the Readers Indigestible after all... :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Another article on the same thing

It does mention being frugal but to me there's a world of difference between being stingy and being frugal.Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Gosh, honestly most school kids could provide a better piece. What a lot of nothingness. As for the alarm clock - get a wind up one! On the plus side I love the loo roll holder in the photo and am considering persuing the net for one.Put the kettle on.0

Me too - I've already been looking!
This one is similar but very pricey; this one is a bit cheaper but still pricey. But I also really liked this one, and this one and they're quite a lot less...
Still, the ones which came with the house are still perfectly serviceable - and I AM trying to be frugal...maybe....:rotfl:0 -

*drools* But being true to OS we shall dream until we too need to replace ours.
Don't think I can work out a way to craft one, even if I had an old letter box to play with.Put the kettle on.0 -
we take the batteries out of our digi camera in between uses as we find they run down faster - well we open the hatch on the camera and most supermarkets tell you on the shelf edge thingy how many sheets are on a roll. It seems an article in being mean to me. Lets see if they have the same attitude to things if they walk a mile in the shoes of some of the people on here who are really struggling yet are generous in spirit enough to send us support and give us all advice - I have just sat and knitted a baby blanket for my favourite charity who has a site full of equally nice people, thats how I give - time and love. Ok sorry gang maybe i misread it and was having a grumpy day. After receiving work news of possible imminent redundancy and the constant battle to contain home costs i feel weary when others deride efforts to make funds stretch. I believe its more important than ever to support charities right now as many are struggling, i also believe in giving a fair reward for service provided. What i dont believe is fair is judging others efforts to live within thier means even if it involves drastic cutbacks where they would rather not. I hold my hands up on second reading this article is pointing at meanness rather than frugality. Off to find my happy pants to wear today.....Pay off as much as you can 2011 challenge member 15:

OOps reeevesy wasnt getting at you hunny, was annoyed about the article. We all help charities however we can. I agree that scrimping and saving can help you afford whatever luxury your family wants, its not just for people who are in financial trouble. After all many of us were brought up by family that had to be frugal because of wars. Tipping staff in restaurants is a difficult one, I always try to do it because my Ds was a waitress and its a lousy job but a lot of people dont do it. Like all things personal choice rules. Sorry to hear you have possible redundancy hanging over you, you are bound to be weary!Clearing the junk to travel light
