I cut them about 1/4" thick in slices, and dip in a diluted lemon juice to stop them going brown.
Place them on a rack and pop them into the oven when I've finished cooking whatever and just leave them in there till cold, turning after an hour or so, then leave them on the work surface,in a day or 2 they are done.

I also air dry them,as above except, instead of in the oven, put a piece of bamboo garden pole through them and hang in the sunshine, again done in a few days.

I keep them in a Tupperware box with a piece of kitchen roll at the bottom, seem to keep for months, and yes great for lunch boxes.

Can also do banana chips too;)

Thanks for that - would save time/money fiddling round with my dehydrator.

Errr....what type of cooker do you have please? (just in case it's an Aga - and its not going to translate over to a standard electric fan oven cooker like mine.....)

Hi everyone - I am really enjoying this thread.

Our financial situation is changing dramatically shortly and one of the things I have done is really re-focused on OS approach - I was brought up on no money myself and my Mum is the most OS person I know.

I made jam for the first time this month - with cherries from next doors tree (with permission!), and also some blackcurrant with some from the school garden. I am lucky in that we moved a couple of years ago so have a reasonable sized garden and we now have 7 free range chickens, a good sized veg plot and mature fruit trees. Lots of blackberries, etc within a short walk.

I really like the apple rings idea - having three mature apple trees, and a smaller espalier results in an overwhelming quantity of apples. I usually juice as much as I can be bothered with but this year it is fairly critical that I process and store as much as I can.

We went for a walk yesterday and found that the bilberries are ripe if anyone else has a patch locally. I picked what we found and froze them. Never going for a walk without a plastic bag again. We also saw some cobnuts so I need to check when they are ripe, and write where they are on the calender. And we saw some burdoch so we need to go back with the folding spade as I want to try making dandelion and burdoch. We already made elderflower champagne a la HFW and some fruit teabag wine from http://www.selfsufficientish.com/

15 bags of granulated sugar was £8 in Makro - a little more than Farmfoods but a lot easier to get it home! We seem to be going through it at an alarming pace with the jam and wine making. What is difficult is resisting the temptation to spend more on gadgets (like a dehyrdator)! My aim is to try and have a store of treats for when things get difficult, and we end up living on the wonderfully well thought out feed 4 for £100.

Today I have made some cinnamon buns [like chelsea buns but without the currants]. They have cost me 10p each to make. I cannot understand why the bakery charges so much for them. DH has taken 4 to work to see if he can get orderes for them.

My Dd went to local sure start centre yesterday for the free baby massage class yesterday and on way home her and friend stopped at cake shop. Dd bought a custard tart for Sil as a treat but her friend bought cakes and sandwiches for her and Ds - it cost over a fiver - when will her friends cotton on to all this. Dd said to her I could make 2 meals for 4 of us with that money and have change.

I all, I am delurking, and finding the confidence to post more, this thread is hugely inspirational!
I currently don't have a garden, but have filled a couple of window boxes with some yummy strawberry plants with the hope that they might produce enough for me to try my hand at jam making! At the moment I am saving any jars I find in anticipation. Would love to have a veggie plot one day though, but for now I am happy to bake HM cakes, cookies and other treats rather than waste money at the supermarket!

Made loads of fairy cakes in anticipation of visitors and just flavoured them with some cinnamon and mixed spice, they are going down a bomb...was going to ice them but didn't bother as they all liked them as they are.

Yes, the cinnamon buns are the chelsea bun recipe but with no raisins.
The recipe is on videojug [utube] . its bread flour with eggs added. Very delicious.
