Watched "Back in Time" last night - about the High St of a small market town back through the ages. Probably everybody already watched it bu I hadn't heard of it - it was the 30s and lovely
So today I'll watch the Victorian and Edwardian periods on iPlayer. It was amazing to see how popular the butchers shop was, with no pre-packed meat. I loved it and will watch it all over again :j:j
Maybe there is hope for us yet - maybe really OS will come back !0 -
Awww, I wanted to watch that, sounds like my kind of thing. Just looking at all the TV programmes - this one, Victorian and Edwardian farm, Sue and Giles Good Life etc ... it does seem like there is an appetite for Old Style stuff. I really like the Olde Style way of shopping. I imagine myself with a wicker basket trotting down to the butcher, baker and candlestick maker. But there are some non-OS things I'd be loath to give up like my washing machine just for starters!:DTrying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!

And Kirstie is back with her "Homemade Home" too. (I missed the High street last night as I was late home and watched Kirstie on +1 - can't get player here).
I was just boiling the orange and lemon peels in syrup for candied peel at the time, having bought the material over lunch to make stockings for all my siblings and significant others, as we have decided to do a Secret Santa large pressie for one and just stocking stuffers (limit is €5 or less) for the others. I think I need afew days off to accomplish all these plans though!!GC 2010 €6,000/ €5,897

Well I am truly o/s at the mo - managing with just a sink and a cooker. The kitchen came out on Monday and the new one isn't going in till Friday. Im cold, everythings covered in plaster dust. Im finding it hard to keep my sense of humour now. The new bath is tiny and difficult to get in and out of, when they eventually put the new shower in we cannot use it till a week on Friday when everything is passed as safe - not much hope of thet as the socket for the washer just fell out of the wall! Sorry to moan but am now fed up. If one more person says it will be lovely when its finished I may cry - again :mad:Clearing the junk to travel light

Ginny, i do empathise...when we had our kitchen ripped out a couple of years ago it was stripped right back to bare brick and they had to plaster etc...they put in a temporary working sink unit 4 ft away from the wall almost in the centre of the kitchen and it had a long pipe across the kitchen. The cooker, fridge freezer, food, crockery etc were all crammed in the living room. I found it all quite intrusive really with builders, plumbers, plasterers, kitchen fitters, electricians etc traipsing in and out for almost 5 weeks. The bathroom was then gutted and refitted but fortunately it didn't take as long as the kitchen and at least they didn't have to lay a new floor upstairs...like they did in the kitchen (cement flooring and then tiling on top).
It will be nice when it is done but that doesn't do much to make you feel anybetter when you are having to put up with the mess and the nuisance and inconvenience such as you are.Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

A really OS evening as I've put my back out, so I watched Edwardian Farm and the High Street programme on i-player - the Victorian one and half the Edwardian one.
I have to say - I SUPPOSE it makes good television but WHY do they always have to put really stupid challenges in? If their aim is really to revitalise the High Street, then it's a bit ridiculous to make it so very difficult for those taking part, no? I mean, come on, why choose a family where the WOMAN was the artisan baker if you know that means that her pig-headed husband who's never baked anything in his life will have to do the baking and will !!!! it right up? Similarly, giving the poor butchers nothing but game - good grief, NO-ONE sells ONLY game - you wouldn't have a long enough season. And surely they've got enough sense to dress the rabbits or the birds so they don't look so unappetising to "modern" eyes? Though I have to say, the very plummy woman who said, oh look at the poor little creatures hanging up wants taking out and giving a good slap.
Well, goodness me, I appear to be ranting. You can tell I don't normally watch televisionPerhaps I had better take a break from it for a while...:rotfl:
