Re hard core survivalist sites ...it doesnt do any harm at all to join them and read up. Even if you learn just one thing then that's good. Anywhere can get floods, or have a major fire, or water mains can burst... etc.

Not much fruit or nut foraging here apart from brambles - defended by thick gorse bushes! But we have fish, shellfish and seaweed, plus useful things like driftwood, fishboxes, net etc that get washed up on the beach.

well Chocclare I worked out I could do most of day four as I have large stocks of vegatarian food and also frozen hm baby food for little man. I also have enough loo rolls etc but as for day five, think its bit too chilly here to try the no electric thing. We have a camping stove and spare gas so thats ok.

Its day 4 NSD for me and am really enjoying it, both freezers are full and Im living off them for another few days. I think I just cheated though as Sil just picked up a huge salmon from Mr T 28.50 reduced to a tenner and I couldnt pass that up could I? It now filleted and should do 8 or 9 meals in various guises.

At last Dd has finished sorting the house out apart from waiting for a new boiler. She has bargain hunted and been gifted everything she needs and last night Ds and Sil picked her couches up so it actually looks homely now. Ds gave her some of his furniture as he is moving home in a fortnight. So I think (fingers crossed) we can all relax now. And Dgs is back to his old self so he must be feeling better after the carbon monoxide business - thank all the gods of every religon !

Glad to hear they're all better - it was you I was thinking of when I put about using outdoor cooking appliances indoors - carbon monoxide just isn't worth the risk, is it? And, as you say, thank God they're all OK.

D&DD, have you thought about the tea lights in large can method of cooking?!!! I can remember reading a book by Neville Shute years ago where... some disaster or another happened, can't remember now, but there was no electricity or gas. ALL the "housewives" in his story managed breakfast perfectly well because they all, without fail, set the frying pan in the fire to cook eggs and bacon, and had the children make toast with toasting forks. One of them commented that it took longer and made her frying pan "dreadfully black", but the women basically just got on with it. I think we forget it's not so very long ago since people cooked over what was essentially open fires indoors! Of course, that's little consolation for those who don't HAVE a fire or a woodburner in their house...;)

Ooh, and I forgot to post Day Six. I can really empathise with this one - this has happened to me twice and each time I have just phoned DH. Not that I am a wuss or anything - it's just His Job. I know what to do in theory (he insisted I help him both times) but my worry is that since breaking both my arms three years ago (fell off me bike - don't ask...) I'm not sure I have the strength to do it without a man. On reflection that last sentence sounded slightly ruder than it was meant to do... :D

DD&D, CC's post reminded me (god that sounds like Yes Minster doesnt it !) You can make a circle of tealights, at least 9 of them. Place a bit of 2x1" in a triangle shape around them, and an old oven or grill shelf over them, resting on the wood. Sit the pot or kettle on that and it will boil in 20 mins. I did it many times in winter because I wanted to see if I could ! (The RV was Not Amused) :rotfl:again !

How fabulous. I mention fish as its a protein source. People seem to always go on about blackberries and stuff, but not fish. Its a shame they cant be easily farmed on small holdings, dig a pond, chuck some trout in,it just doesnt work.Shame.
