July, just for clarity its very unlikely to be the router itself thats causing any trouble -home ones tend to be very basic in any case
the stuff discussed so far arises if he has a computer anywhere on the network connected to the same router he can see data sent from your computer to the router and from the router back to your PC0 -
Yes - his pc is connected to the same router....It's nice to be important.....but it's more important to be nice0

Understand. OP thinks someone is sniffing/packet capturing at the router/gateway. Nobody's dropped in a Keylogger? Don't have a currently lame and weak password? Ruled those things out?
Options are to use a provider offering HTTPS for the whole session (if you are 'doing' webmail) or pops/imaps/smtp (force tls) if you are doing somthing like Thunderbird/Outlook/OE.
Gmail is available using HTTPS at https://mail.google.com, GMX appears to offer it too: https://gmx.com/ and I'm sure there are others. That will keep the session end to end encrypted and you can tcpdump all you like at the gateway and just see garbage :-)0 -
Without wanting to tread over any sensitive lines here, but it would seem the real solution to this problem is a non-technical problem.
It doesn't seem normal for this sort of mistrust to be rearing its head in relationships. Is there any sort of way of addressing the issue thats causing your need for secure email?
Sorry if this is a bit personal, I just think sometimes a cure is better than what a short term remedy would give you. If he isn't able to hijack your emails, what does he spy on next. where does it end?0 -
Have checked for keylogger - none found.
Got Malwarebytes installed now.
Passwords changed regularly and are strong.
Have been using outlook express (ntlworld) and yahoo but have just started making more use of my googlemail account.
Send messages to friends via facebook / myspace but not sure if that's secure. (Probably not!)
I wouldn't mind if I was 'up to something' but I'm not!!It's nice to be important.....but it's more important to be nice0 -
Just out of curiosity July, how computer literate is your OH?
Might be able to take your PC security to the EXTREME:dance:
Of course, it's not to say that this won't take a lot of time/effort, but would be totally worth it
Hide your Entire Operating system from Prying eyes
But back on track, google's pretty secure, make sure you use https and an alphanumeric password (that isn't easy to guess!):exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!0 -
dragon934 - I hear everything you're saying (and it's something that's currently on my mind a lot)....It's nice to be important.....but it's more important to be nice0

The other problem is that your OH has physical access to your PC by living in the same address. He could use various Windows Password recovery tools to access your login and gain info that way.
Another reason why I asked Where does it end?0 -
Ah.... I see....
Well, if only I could prove whether or not he IS doing it!!!
Or maybe he just happens to be very intuitive and good at guessing. It's nice to be important.....but it's more important to be nice0
