Try https://www.phonegaim.com and refer to this thread for information.

    http://www.phonegaim.com/

It's the phone version of gaim, basically a gaim version with SIP support as far as I'm aware but don't quote me on that as I don't use it myself.
    http://gaim.sourceforge.net

Gaim is a multiprotocol messaging client and can be downloaded here

All free software under the GPL licence, projects which recieve alot of their funding from http://www.linspire.com

For information on what SIP is, read this site.
    http://www.sipcenter.com/

Note: dial 00 +44 before you dial any UK numbers and 00 before any PSTN numbers. SIpphone give you 5 free minutes of calls a day and, five calls a mintue each. Be warned SIP is still in its infancy tbh so go easy on it for the time being it will get alot better.

SIP is a request-response protocol that closely resembles two other Internet protocols, HTTP and SMTP (the protocols that power the world wide web and email); consequently, SIP sits comfortably alongside Internet applications. Using SIP, telephony becomes another web application and integrates easily into other Internet services. SIP is a simple toolkit that service providers can use to build converged voice and multimedia services.

I'm sure you can all appreciate why getting behind SIP is so important.

Skype is a propriarty protocol. If you buy a phone for skype you won't be able to use it for any services other than skype. There are hundreds of SIP providers out there and if you were to buy a sip phone you could use your sipphone with any of those providers because SIP is an open protocol and just happens to be technically superior to Skype even if the first indications of call quality don't always give peopel that impression.
  • I have been using skype for about a year or so and it is excellent (over Broadband it is perfect - better quality than my landline).

In my opinion it is easier to setup than sip and more user friendly, I have also installed the Skype answering Machine as recommended by anothe MSE'r

    To infinity and beyond!

Where could I obtain/test a Sip phone? Is it hardware or software

3 choices for SIP phone -
    1. get hardware phone
    2. get analogue telephone adapter (ATA) and plug in existing handset
    3. get softphone installed on computer and add microphone/headset

3 is cheaper but 1 and 2 work when pc is off - try that with Skype!

Hardware options usually available from provider, typ £69
Software also via them, price from free. Xten is popular. There is also a version for wi-fi pda

There are several providers; I don't know them all. Some will give or sell an ordinary landline number with the account.

I am starting in reverse order; I only have the number (with sipgate). I hope to use with pda (looking), no broadband at home yet either, so have a good laugh.

Depends on what you want to use it for - Skype is great (and free) if you want to talk to someone else over the internet, so long as they have the software installed (and why wouldn't they - it is free!). I believe (but have not tried it) that there is also a pay version if you want to call to landlines.

I want to ask where Deleted_User's avatar came from, and can I steal it for somewhere else?

I'll see if I can find it and send you a PM with a link. :)

Have you (or anyone else) any thoughts on a decent microphone/headset model or supplier, for a novice?
