Blleeeurggh... warm and sleepy and want to go home.. erm, hello everyone!

So glad it's Friday, was meant to be going out tonight but really not feeling like it, had a rubbish sleep and got a bit of a funny tummy.

Planning to spend the weekend painting the living room, but if it's really nice weather maybe not! On the other hand if it's boiling hot it might be better to be inside for some of it.

Oh No squizz hope you feel better, have you taken something like immodium to just try and settle your tummy? Think it will be way too hot for decorating, but equally probably too hot for being out and about too much...sitting in the garden with a cold drink is about the best idea lol

Ive had 1 customer in all morning...typically just got my lunch out and someone walks in grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • Ok you runners, tell me how to increase my distance :o At the momment I am running 5k 3 times a week but if I try and run further, I can't if I try and run faster I burn out before 5k :( I suppose it doesn't help that I am carrying a lot more lb's than I was when I started running :undecided The problem is in just under 3 months I need to be running 10k comfortably, like thats going to happen :o

Ok Pap what I would say is that you probably need to mix it up a bit..do one long run (which at the moment is 3k for you) and make sure you do it slow so that you can talk or sing as you are running along. Then you need to do one run which you are going to do some kind of speedwork in there like run along the street at normal pace and then do burst of running really hard, or if you don't like the sound of this then find a hilly spot and do lots of hill repeats. and the third run at the moment just get out there and run. The thing which I found really helped me getting further was to run a route that I didn't know the distance and just run, you only need to start increasing your milage by a small amount. Before you know it you will be creeping up to that 10k..

You can do it :) Mind over matter

Pap, Sal has given really good advice, try and do some different routes so that you've got new things to look at - it can be a good distraction from the extra distance. You could try looking at it as adding an extra 0.4km a week, which sounds like a nice manageable distance? In practise though you'll probably find some weeks you add a lot more on than others. You'll get there!

To increase my distance I looked at time rather then distance so I would run 15 mins out and then back, then next time run 20 mins out and back to up stamina. Only when I was doing a full hour comfortably did I start to look at distance. Because I go out and back the same route rather than do a loop IYSWIM I just picked the next landmark, so my shortest run is to a set of lights (3km), then there's a roundabout (5km) then the town limit sign (6km) then a pub (7km). I went from 5km to 10km doing that in about 10days... Breaking the 5km for me was as much about breaking a psychological barrier as a physical one really.

  • Thanks Sally and Squizz. Sally I tend to run in parks/fields etc I have never run on the road and don't really want to. Therefore I tend to lap myself or run around in circles. I have tried interval training before but I don't seem to keep it up :( I think I will just have to keep with it and increase my distance slowly. Because I have little/no speed I think I make running much harder for myself but sadly I can't change that.

Ah well, I shall run the 10k :D Just need to get on with it :o
