Why ? What next - personal tax rates?

Even if they were mortgage rates certainly shouldn't be

Well it includes VAT doesn't it? I hate to be cynical but am I correct to presume you don't have one of
    these pensions coming your way.

So you think a measure that omits council tax but includes overseas student fees is the correct one for pensioners icon7.gif

If the pensioner is an overseas student, and qualifies for council tax exemption, it seems sensible to me Stevie. :)

The pension grab may be a red herring for the private sector but it is funny how the Tory faithful turn when they think it my be them paying the price.

I'm not sure that's fair Stevie. Most DB pension holders in this country are not wealthy tories with country estates, they are people who have modest pensions and who may be hurt if companies are allowed to tinker with the mechanism for working out increases.

Not sure what all the fuss is about. On the continent, inflation is always defined as CPI, not RPI. RPI is a peculiarly British thing, as we are all so obsessed with house buying, mortgages, etc. Yawn.

CPI wasn't recorded in the UK at the time of the law change to schemes (which AFAIK does not specify RPI either, though that is what schemes use). I think it was brought in about a year after.

Not wealthy like those benefit claiming Chavs icon7.gif I obviously agree with you, but you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be the well heeled pensioners that make the most noise.
    Are you Vivasor BTW?

Someone on a pensions thread on the MF, just thought the pension and Viva link may just have been you.

Come on Stevie you're smarter than that.

VAT is imposed on discretionary consumption, council tax and personal tax isn't (they're based on your perceived ability to pay ie relative wealth).

Giving FS pensioners an uplift because council tax has gone up is effectively giving them a discount (whereas non-FS pensioners have to pay the full wack). That's not fair - we should all pay our dues.

Whether I have a FS pension is immaterial to my views of what is fair to the public as a whole (FWIW I don't but OH does :) . I do have PPPs but they've been trashed by the Labour Party so yes, I am bitter and twisted)

So if you retire & bought an RPI linked annuity rather than a level one would you be happy if the company you bought it from suddenly changed the index to a lower one?

discretionary consumption............. gas, electicity (at 5%), telephone and mobiles usage, clothes (not smaller children's), shoes, car fuel, car servicing, house repairs, pots pans cups plates and a few more things I'm sure.

When the government changed the rules on pensions index linking a decade-or-so ago did it include all those who were then in receipt of a annuity?
