Wilkinsons Plus - limit of 4 per item, per delivery so they can charge more postage!!

I wanted some willow screening I found on Wilkinsons Direct website.

I needed 16 of them but it said 'Min Order 2 - Max Order 4', so I called and asked why I could not have 16 as it stated there was 512 of them in stock. The chap on the phone told me he could only order 4 but he would put me through to customer services who might be able to override it.

So the lady comes onto the phone and I ask her if I can have 16 of these items as I could only order 4 online.' she says 'no, you can only order 4 as it is on Special Offer' she then added 'our customers would be upset if someone bought lots of them so this is why there is the limit'. She then added.... 'if you want more than 4 you'll have to put another order in'. So I said 'So, I can order more than once?' And she said yes. 2 of the orders have been dispatched already.

Eh?

I guess this is another way of getting 4 lots of postage out of you at £4.95 a time. The screens were VERY cheap, they were £20+ elsewhere and only £4.99 on their site so I took the blow of the postage, but IMO it's a bit naughty of Wilkinsons to impose this so called limit but to let you place multiple orders anyway - it is surely to make you pay multiple postage charges if you order too much and it has to go on another courier. Ironically they'll all be bought by the same Courier anyway.

But it would cost more to ship 16 than four, so I presumably they would be actually losing out on the deal if they sold you 16 and only charged £4.95 in postage.

But they have a rate of £4.95 for postage. Would you be happy ordering from online stores that only let you order 4 items a time and had to pay more postage each time. I won;t be ordering again. Bizarre policy.

As for losing out? They pay their couriers one amount, per shipment - usually about £2.50 a parcel if it is Hermes - whatever the size. I can order how many packs of 3 x 5ft x 4ft fence panels http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/Fence-Panels/Classic-Closeboard-Panel-Pack-5ft-x-3/invt/gn00116?htxt=PsAGyAqy/DSGVBgOHPBfATKVETOKIWHcwqoICuDrG/xTcDPfxIrYzUvEu76RzzM6wutKTeo9AOCB%0AtDs76aYYKg%3D%3D for £4.95 delivery yet I cannot order 16 willow screens that roll up small (see the picture) http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/bin/venda?bsref=wilkinsonplus&log=22&mode=add&curpage=&next=&ex=co_disp-shopc&buy=0273095&invt=0273095&ivref=0273095&qty=4&x=74&y=19 that would be smaller, for the same price?

its not about compensation, I just think it a stupid policy, to not let me order more than 4 as the other customers 'would be upset' (her words) yet then to tell me that I could order 4 times.

Would you shop with Tesco/Very/Sainsbury/etc.. if they only let you order £30 a time and made you pay a new delivery charge once you got to that limit? I think I know what the answer would be!!

No, I cannot get into town at the moment else I would have. But would they have only let me put 4 through the till I'd have probably had to walk them back to my car and come back for 4 more in case the upset customers saw me!!

It's frustrating when you try to buy a special offer only to see the previous customer buying huge quantites of an item and clear the shelf.

So, you'd get ticked off if I was to buy the whole shelf but wouldn't if I went back in 4 times and bought 4 each time and cleared the shelf? Would you be standing there all day to see if I came back? It makes no difference at all. And this site is all about encouraging people to go and clear shelves, who is to blame for that? It's all everyone wants to do these days.

I did not clear the shelf at all. At time of order there was 512 in stock, after I had ordered - some in the morning and some in the evening, there was 476 left so not many people were buying them. It actually makes no difference if I was buying them to resell either - they had the choice in refusing my order before dispatching it. They chose to let me order 16 over 4 orders to charge me more money. But actually, if you work it out they have lost money 4 times over rather than losing money just the once.

I've had 2 of the deliveries today - one by parcelforce, the other came later by HDN. Why not have them all on one courier? And before you say its about the size of the package they also delivered a chair from Wilkos to my address by mistake and that package was 4 times bigger than mine and cost the same so it really has nothing to do with size/weight.

So lets see. They let me put 4 orders through so they could make an extra £1 on each parcel as they were selling 'loss leaders'? As they would have to pay a transaction fee and a fee by their merchant bank each time my credit card was processed - which probably comes to around 60p a time - that leaves 40p profit they made - and as I got 88p back on each order as I used Quidco that leaves them 48p down on each transaction.

By having to make 4 orders they would be losing money on each transaction rather than losing on just the one had I been able to order them all in one go.

And they never stopped me buying them at all.

Good job you lot are not in business - you'd not last very long with the way your brains are working!! Do you lot work for Wilkinsons by any chance?

Both Tesco and Sainsbury limit the number of any particular item you can buy for home delivery to 10 I think, and yes, I do shop with them.

They let me have 24 x 6 can packs of the same dog food the other day (I get a month at a time) as well as lots of cat food cans and biscuits and often buy lots of multiples when doing a monthly shop so maybe this is down to your store putting the limit on.
