With android you can get various keyboards (like the old predictive text keyboards you mentioned (2 abc)) other than the stock one, before i found swype i got 'better keyboard' from the market, that was just a slightly different layout and it also has different themes.

What you mentioned does sound like swype.

As for the speeds increasing:
