Hya. I`ve found crisps don`t seem to do too good near their use by date. Tend to go a bit soggy, and funny oily tasting. There thats put you off eating them now!:rotfl:
  • There was something on the news a couple of months ago now, about a couple who were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They said to the reporter that they were going to open one of their presents from 50 years ago.... a tin of chicken (or meat of some sort!). Times were obviously much harder then and they vowed they would keep the present for a special occasion! Awwww.......
(Having said this, im not sure that i would have eaten it!!):rotfl:

I was about to do some baking - admittedly it has been a while - and found the following, does anyone know if any of these would still be ok to use? Or am I just being a tight fisted minger? :D

Self raising flour - unopened - expired August 05
    Oatbran - unopened - expired March 05

    And the worst

A bottle of open vanilla essence - expired April 03!!!!!

    Cheers xx

This reminds me of an old Harry Enfield episode where the two old gits are in the supermarket and wallop a child over the head with a tin so it dents and gets a reduced sticker on it. :rotfl:

I believe that dented tins are ok as long as they are not bulging or the seams have split.

Nix143, I've been using up bottles of vanilla and almond essence that I must have had for about 10 years or probably more. It's only a few drops in each cake but they taste okay and we haven't had any ill effects.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

Yes, dented cans should be fine, provided there are no rust marks round the dent. I often pick these up cheap on the supermarket clearance shelf. The thing you really need to look out for is any swelling of the can (or carton if it's milk or something like that), as it indicates anaerobic bacteria, such as the one that causes botulism; they produce various gases as they multiply, so the container swells, and most of these bugs are seriously nasty.

As for packets, as long as the contents are dry, it's unlikely that any bugs will be living in them (although weevils etc might be another matter, as we discovered on another thread). The taste may be affected, but it's unlikely to cause illness.
