This certainly appears to be a recurring theme now - people either volunteering for or being talked into the 'free' BT Evening & Weekend Plan which auto-renews each year but for which the letter (which is supposed to arrive about 4 weeks before renewal) never arrives.

I wonder whether Martin can take this one up with whoever he knows at BT?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

As far as I can tell, if you sign up to a BT line now you have no choice other than to take the evening and weekend plan.

I'm also concerned that BT company representative's response is always please pm/email rather than an outright declaration of what exactly they can do - and if they can do it on these forums, why is someone without the internet left with whatever the call centre person at the other side of the phone tells them as the be all and end all of the situation?!

No, that's not so - the choice of the UW, the UE&W or the UA plans remains - but the agents are usually on commission so the more they sell, the more they earn.

I have just called BT to check if we are stuck in a 'evening & weekend' thing contract and the man told me that that it renewed - today!

Is it too late to cancel? Yes - it renewed today.

Can I use any of the distance selling regulations etc - No - it renewed today and it is too late.

How much will it cost me to get out of it - £89.75.

Any chance of not charging me this? - No - it has gone to the high court and tough luck.

I didn't get any letter saying this - Bad luck, computer says we sent it.

How about if my computer says I sent one back saying we don't want to renew your stupid contract? - We will pass your details on to a debt collection agency who will hound you and ruin your credit rating.
  • I am also having this problem at the moment and can't seem to get through to anyone @ BT . They are asking for a £66 fee to cancel and said that they have sent the letter out to me , I have NEVER recieved this letter. ANy help would be great

I'm also in a similar position. I did actually receive the letter, rang them on the same day I received it and told them I didn't want to renew it. They person I spoke to tried to persuade me to continue telling me it would cost me more money but I still said no. I had so many problems with BT since I took out the contract that I just wanted to move on. Before I hung up I double checked I my contract wouldn't renew and was assurred it was all sorted.

Couple of months later I've signed up with another company and get a letter out from BT looking for £84.84 for cancelling my contract.
Got on the phone straight away and was told initially it was because my BB wasn't up until November and that was why I was being charged. Hung it the phone but knew the cost seemed too high for that so rang back and was told the charge was for the phone line and I'd have another charge for BB making it £124. I was then told they had no log of the call I'd made to stop the renewal and basically it was just tough . She then tried to sell me another package despite me really upset on the phone:eek::eek::eek:. I did ask if she could trace the call I'd made through my phonebill and was told I had to do this myself.

I'm so disgusted they can get away with this. I'd budgeted £45 for cancelling my BB contract but there's no way I can afford the rest. I feel sick

Yes, definitely. Me too. Not MSE-smart perhaps but I'm paying to get away from them!
