BT Cancellation Charges

Hi,

BT are trying to charge me for cancellation as I'm swithing to sky, however I thought I was on a month by month rolling contract. They said I had a free E&W calls deal which means I have a 12 month rolling contract, I never knew this. They said it was in a letter they sent out about 3 years ago (in the small print). What can I do to not have to pay this? Anyone else had the same issue?

write to bt and ask them for it,
BT cut my line of when I was with another supplier, when they reconnected me they tried to charge me a reconnection charge, and when I moved to another supplier of my choice 3 months later they want £60 to cancel a contract I never had with them,
Write to ofcom, or BT customer services.

I have just come accross the very same thing. I am moving a month today and have just been on the phone with BT to cancel my phoneline. I only had the very basic package as i only wanted a landline for my broadband. This was fully explained to the advisor when I took out the line rental.

Apparently I have to pay £75 to get this cancelled as it is a self renewing contract - something to do with the E&W calls that are part of my contract.

From what I understood from the advisor when I took out the line rental with BT over 2 years ago was that i was tied in for the first 12 months as with any contract, and then it was rolling. The have told me that they issued a letter informing me of this renewal in April this year but I've had absolutely nothing from them. I knew in April that I was moving out in August ( at the end of my tenancy) so I would have cancelled it back then.

Any ideas how I can proceed with this.? The advisor I spoke to today has said that she will escalate it but i doubt anything will come of it.

I had the exact same issue last year when I tried to change from BT to another supplier. I couldn't be bothered to argue about it at the time so when I knew the time for the automatic renewal came up I rang up and canceled. The adviser was saying you know that the evening and weekend calls is free, I said yes but in my opinion making that option a 12 month contract is simply a way of trapping you with them for a year, and that I couldn't wait to get away from them as I know hold a deep mistrust of them. Good idea BT, annoy your customers so they leave and never come back.

Looks like there is a fictitious department in BT that is responsible for sending out phantom letters, looking at various forums the number of phantom letters that BT say they send out to inform customers that their rolling contract is due for renewal beggars believe,as very few people seem to receive them. This rolling contract con is something the regulators should be looking at!!!!

I'm in the same boat as well, thread similar

Would you help me investigate this or will I have to go through the normal procedure to get a satisfactory answer?

Regulators? They should be shot, they certainly don't earn their dinner. If they exist, that is.

Had you completed your initial contract for line rental Owen?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
