Booze free wannabee...support needed

Decided to test myself and give it up for 100 days. No particular reason - not really a big drinker. More they type who goes to the off licence to buy a beer, realises it works out cheaper per can to buy 24 than it is to by 4, then makes a pig of himself and drinks more than he should. Don't think I have a drink problem (or maybe I'm in denial), but if I'm honest I maybe do sink a little too much

So, today is day 1. 100 days takes me into early December. Any words of encouragement would be appreciated!

Well done - like with stopping smoking maybe you should pay yourself some of the money saved to do something nice with.

    Good luck.

  • When I split up with an ex I used to frequent my local every night and drank about 6-7 pints as it was good company as was quite down. That was about 4 years ago and since Boxing day 2002 have probably had about 10 pints as becoming a family man has meant money is needed elsewhere and I now have no reason to go to the pub and when we go for a pub lunch more often than not have a coke.

I wasn't an alcoholic as it was a 4-5 month binge but almost a switch inside me that makes it taste rank now, although the beer belly hasn't gone down so quick.

How about putting the money aside every time you fancy a beer for the next hundred days. For instance, where you would go out and buy a four pack for the evening, put a fiver in a jar instead. I reckon after 100 days you could save a tidy sum just in time for christmas.
I often have a drink on an evening. I'm considering cutting out weekday drinking and saving the money I would have spent. Maybe we could go head to head. Could be a good challenge.

Sorry GP ,- I can support your stance on the Tesco Value Loo Rolls and on people owning more than one pair of shoes.
I would be more than supportive (morally) if you were abstaining from the old conjugals for 100 days but God No! not the alcohol.

  • Good luck GreyPilgrim - I know what you mean - I always buy 2 bottles rather than one cos its cheaper and then drink it and feel foul after. I only drink once or twice a month and if its there its gotta be drunk - good luck sweetie - i may well join you!!!

  • Had one glass too many last night (which means more than 1 and a half)

(btw, when you order a glass of wine these days is it just me or does it seem like half a pint???? The place I was at didn't have large or small)

Anyway, here I am, not with a hangover as such but a bit foggy, lacklustre, unmotivated. I'm a bit too old to just leap out of bed the next morning full of the joys....

So maybe I'll join you too!

    Hi Grey Pilgrim,

I have been sort of doing this too, I have not been buying any alcohol but I still drink at work functions (it's all free!) and when the OH has wine at his house. I went to a wedding at the weekend, I drove, it was the first time I have ever done that and I had a great time still (although I never realised how annoying my friends can be after a drink!)
I will definitely be lending my support and will subscribe to this thread so I am not tempted off the wagon!

    Good luck GP!

I would start now by measuring
    -cash saved
    -waistline reduction
    - water drunk instead (will make your skin glow!!)
    - taxi fare saved if you are designated driver
    Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.

The only trouble with my plan so far has been that:
    1. I am expected to give people lifts which is fine but I end up having to hang around for my friends and having to pester them to go and also I get in last, so while they're all getting into bed I am still trundling home
    2. Petrol costs have increased, see above also. My friends have benefitted though!
    3. Meals, I have to ask not to include alcoholic drinks on my part of the bill when it is split and it can cause friction.

Still managed sunday night out and had coke instead, need to find me a new drink lol
