Cancelling Sky - A word of Warning

What with the latest intended price hike from Sky wef from Sept we have decided it's time to canx our subscription with Sky which would be over £50 per month! Having been with Sky since the start (20 years?) it has now become just too expensive and a luxury we can do without.

Trying to cancel was an absolute joke. The customer services asst we spoke you tried (in vain) to get us to stay with them by interrogating us on our tv viewing habits and putting forward different reduced package options. Round and round in circles it went, she just would not take 'no' for an answer and could not comprehend that we just wanted to canx entirely. We were even accused of disloyalty to Sky when we said we had Freeview in another room  Why should we, the customer, have to put up with this high handed attitude from Sky. They obviously think they are a law unto themselves!! After over 20 mins the line went dead. The customer services asst obviously hung up on us when she couldn't get her way. Even a request to speak to a Supervisor of Line Mgr fell on deaf ears  .

On phoning a second time, it would appear that we must have got thru to a Supervisor who was most efficient and checked what had gone on. She advised that our subscription had indeed been canx :T:T and informed us of how to handle arrangements for the last payment due to Sky in order to avoid us being in credit at the end.

Bearing in mind we have been long standing customers of Sky, at no time were we offered any form of enticement to stay with them, ie free movie/sports channels for 6 mos or so, as other people have reported.

So if you're thnking of cancelling, stick to your guns and do not be swayed. You'll get there in the end.

    Hi Furley 1959

As our billing date is in the middle of the month, we queried how the account would be settled. She stated that if we paid our last DD due in mid July, we would in fact be in credit - not a good thing !! as the chances of getting any money back would probably impossible. She advised us to canx our DD with our bank and gave us the amount which would be owed by us to Sky up to our termination date. We should then ring Billing b4 the date the DD would have been taken and pay the required amount owing by Debit or Credit Card.

We just hope that this works OK as already we have had an automatic email confirmation cancelling our subscription and advising that there is an amount outstanding on our account. Just how they work this out is beyond us as we are still in credit up to mid July (as you pay in advance for their service) How can you be overdue with a payment for services not yet due, having not reached the billing date in the middle of the month for the period mid July to mid August!!!

Will wait and see what happens

Sorry I didn't make it clear, the reduced options offered were if we 'dropped' certain packs and had the just basic options. In other words, we would only get what we paid for. Fair enough, but as I said absolutely no mention of any enticement to keep a long standing customer.

if you have sky plus make sure the cancel that or they will carry on charging you about £8 per month for the service as you still get the free channels

I had this problem with them about a year ago only just got it sorted now

Not sure if I have read you post correctly.

Most people get deals when they try to cancel.

I had Sky tv half price for two whole years - just called them every three months and told them I was leaving.

In the end I did leave - even at half price, it can be a shocking waste of money.

PS> Keep your Sky box plugged in - you can get all the freeview channels through it anyway - even without a subscription.

Not true, you can only get Freeview via a TV aerial.;)
