Carpet/underlay websites?

Options
I am going to be buying a carpet from Allied's but they have quoted me silly prices for underlay and door bars etc so i got looking around.Did a search for carpet underlay in google and 2 or 3 came up so just wanted to know if anyone has any idea of they are ok or not having used them before or know of someone who has?

The first one is tradepriced.co.uk and the other one is completelyflooring.co.uk

They are both alot cheaper for underlay than Allied's.For 25 sq mts of underlay for our hall and stairs etc they have said it's £175 but i could get a decent one(i think) on them sites for around £96.Can anyone suggest a good underlay also on the sites?
I was looking at the Duralay step 100..is that any good?

Or how about the Dreamwork 11mm APT from Tradaire on Tradepriced?(£3.49 sq mt after 10% off)

Allied's also want £36 for 3 single and 3 double door bars where they are around £1.96 each on one of them sites:rolleyes:

Thanks
Darren

Dont know about www sites but you can get 3 different qualities of underlay plus just about everything else from BandQ.

I did this at my old place and put the underlay down myself, then got a fitter to fit the carpet for cash on fitting. Saved loads on the price that Allied were asking for.

You can get Cloud 9, which is amazing, from a number of eBay sellers. It worked out cheaper for me to get this, than get the normal underlay from a shop!

Might go for cloud nine then unless anyone can suggest a cheaper one that's just as good?:)

  • Remember, there is a whole range of Cloud 9 products (PU foam types)! Make sure you select the right one for your needs - Cirrus (blue back is most commonly used but Cumulus (green back) is for real luxury feeling and thermal insulation. These type of products have had a big impact on the domestic market. Duralay waffle rubber types are still the most popular underlay to be sold and have great performance including much better accoustic insulation (less noise from stairs/bedrooms) compared to PU foam types! The Tredaire DreamWalk is another good product. Don't skimp on the quality of your underlay - It makes the feel of the carpet and gives you thermal insulation! Go for good quality door metals - you'll see the difference. NB from our family business (90+ years in carpets) Cloud 9 has become very popular with the fitters 'cos apart from being a good product it's much lighter to carry.

Read here for some further info :

Then search for some good deals!

Hi Lord Gardner, if I'm fitting undelay myself, how is it done, is it tacked into place any tips?
Is it worth getting the underlay ourselves and asking the fitter to lay it?

    thanks,

Hubby got the underlay from B&Q for one room. For our bedroom the old underlay was in ok condition so we just re-used that. All our door edge strips came from B&Q too.
working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?
  • I got the cummulus 11m from tradepriced.co.uk. Everything arrived ok but one of the rolls the stitching was not correctly fitting the backing sheet to the undelay. I rang and they said they would swap it no problems. I waited ini all day and no delivery.

In the end I've not followed it up because of too much going on but would think again before using them. Cheap, but the service was not great.
  • I also got the 11mm cumulus, but from https://www.discounted-carpet-underlay.co.uk
Their price is slightly more than tradepriced, but includes free next day delivery and they offer half roll packs.
    They were excellent.

    thanks,
It's always worth asking the fitter for a price - they can often supply it cheaper! Most underlay is 'loose' fitted apart from small pieces for stair pads, infills for alcoves etc. These small pieces are usually stapled to wood floor or taped to adjacent larger pieces for concrete/stone floors. The weight of the underlay and carpet on top should hold it in position - cut to fit with stanley knife - between the gripper rods. The big problem with DIY fitting is that most people don't put the carpet under tension - most important to reduce wear. The underlay should act like a pad under the fabric on an upholstered chair - both being under tension! You will need a knee kicker /carpet stretcher to give the tension and some skill to do it properly! If you use an experienced fitter to fit your carpet properly, you will get years more life from it and save yourself the worry and hassle of getting it right!

Chase them up/ complain - don't let them get away with it!
