As Quentin said, I hope they have written you a suitably apologetic letter.

I also trust you have advised them you want compensation in line with the Ombudsman's guidelines (We have posted quotes / links from it earlier in the thread) for the unreasonable delays they have caused. If you have not claimed this from them, do not be afraid to, they are totally in the wrong and it's only by hitting them in the pocket that they will learn they need to play fair.

Don't forget to tell your friends to not buy insurance on price alone, definately to avoid 1st Central and also to check MSE out as there are loads of other helpful threads on MSE about lots of issues.
