I don't know if is different for dogs....but I only use carb free snacks for Paddy. Freeze dried meat/jerky etc might be good for a dog, or small pieces of meat either raw or cooked.
There is no reason to wait till your vet decides you can home test....it is a bit fiddly and takes a few tries to get used to, but once you have mastered it you really need never panic about hyper/hypo attacks again. TBH, your vet may not even know how to do it with a human kit, mine did not!

Just about to drop Levi at the vet for her second set of curves, she has been doing really well (water intake decreased from 14pints a day! to 6 or 7 pints) so hoping everthing goes well.
Handle every stressful situation like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it ....... just pee on it and walk away.
  • Sounds like Levi is doing really well. My poor puss has been a bit of a grump lately, think he has found out he is spending the weekend at the cattery on his lonesome (the others aren't really cattery cats- at least 2 would just stop eating until I got back) got some lovely fresh scars this morning.

Yes, wannabepennypincher, Levi seems to be doing really well, I just hope we dont have to adjust her insulin too much - if at all.

I hope your cat gets on ok at the cattery this weekend and your scars get a chance to heal.

I didn't think that catteries & kennels would take diabetic animals, is it a specialist place you use?

Our vet has a cattery attached to it and because a vet nurse is at the vets through the night its simple enough for one of them to come through and give his insulin. Some catteries/kennels do take diabetic animals but I think some charge a little extra for the specialist care.

Hmm, yes, diabetic pets don't encourage frequent holidays!

Dear Motherbear, just to say, please don't be scared and there are a lot of diabetic pet owners (past and present) on this board. I'm trying to recall another poster who's dear dog was only recently Dx'd - was it Buddysmum...??? I'll check back through my replies & let you know.

We cared for a diabetic cat sadly no longer with us (died of cancer) and yes, thank goodness for t'internet as we found several message boards (and many new friends) and so much help and support, really wonderful. The site below is great - so many links.

And this is a nice UK site set up by a dear friend, mainly for cat owners but much of the info applies to doggies too - here's my own sugarcat's page.. http://www.sugarpet.net/rocky.html

You are not alone and I wish you all the very best in learning the skills and techniques that will keep your beloved dog healthy and well.

Just checked back - this is the thread I was thinkking of
