I've done removals both ways and I do honestly believe that if a professional removal can be squeezed out of a budget it is worth every penny.
We'd always moved ourselves but then my Mum bought us a "move" as a present and the way it lowered the moving stress was unbelievable (saved on painkillers for headaches and bad backs too
). When we moved here I had movers-Not sure HOW I'd have got the freezer and tumble dryer into the cellar otherwise -was worth it for that alone -not to mention getting furniture through silly little Victorian doors.
I'm decluttering one room at a time at the moment. The dining room/home office had become a general dumping ground but I had to empty it entirely to lay a new floor (instantly freeing up space in the cellar where the laminate and underlay have sat waiting the last three years -oops). I found some fabby curtains this week-The ones I'd been looking at were over £100 but wandered into local curtain shop and found two pairs of almost identical and lined for £10 a pair in an end of line bucket !!! So the doorway (to the cellar) and the french doors will look better and have a bit of insulation this winter. Nothing is going back that doesn't have a home and it looks fab with the cherrywood floor now but the floor is so new it shows up how badly the room needs painting now LOLI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Hypno and Duchy, how brilliant is all this! And macgirl, very organised for a move - I thought I was organised, but I so completely wasn't
:rotfl:
Hypno, I absolutely *love* the idea of a "capsule household" :rotfl: you should make a website :j
At the moment, I'm still trying to get the most out of every existing piece of storage I have, rather than buy new stuff, though I know there's one piece I really do need to buy from Ikea.
Hope you're having a lovely day, Hypno, hairdresser and then a friend, good stuff.

On the boxes front, especially for books and heavier items, smaller boxes are better. OK it means more boxes to move, but it's far better on the back than ones you can hardly lift off the floor. We used numbering system and contents lists too. But putting on the box which room it's going to helps too.
If you do end up moving yourself I found the paper boxes (photocopier, printer at work) were just the right size for books, CD,s & DVD's as they didn't end up too heavy.
Love the fact that DD is packed already, her time babysitting there seems to have made her certain that this is going to be a happy move to a comfortable new home

Hypno, why don't you do the halfway house. When I moved here, I did all the packing up ready to go and then hired a man and a van type venture. 2 men turned up, loaded everything, unplumber machine, drove it here, unpacked everything, plumbed machine in
and it cost me around £200 If I remember...in fact I think it was less than that more like £160. Was worth every penny! I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

Yes, I will pack myself, but get someone to actually load the lorry, transport it and put it in the right rooms, ready for me to unpack again. That is what we did when we moved here and it was well worth what we paid.
Have had a lovely afternoon - but my feet and head hurt - so coffee, sofa, strictly and x factor will be the order of the evening!
