Welcome Ajaney, sounds totally normal to me, they hardly keep their eyes open in the first few weeks but it soon changes. Your health visitor will be able to tell you if the weight gain is normal but feeding all the time is fine, when bf you can't feed too much :)

Thanks for this. He lost 9% of weight in first few days but we got back to birthweight on day 7 & put another 4oz on by day 10. Hasnt been weighed since, the Health visitor said someone would call me this week but havent heard anything so will ring the office Monday & see when he next needs weighing.

I am lucky that I seem to have a good supply of milk, just seem to be nothing but a feeding station atm!

Becles - I'm glad you got the 2nd opinion! I'm still angry at that first GP saying you should just put up with it like its normal  Your in your 30's (I think) not 60's! Hope it improves without surgery :)

ajaney - it all sounds totally normal to me :D Breast milk is digested quite quickly and babies have teeny tiny little tummies so need feeding often and breast feeding is hardwork for a lil baby so they need a nice sleep after they've fed ;)
I generally employ the smile and nod technique when dealing with any comments from people who haven't breast fed/ are too old to remember it :p if all else fails tell them they're obviously boring because he stays awake and smiles for you

    Hello!

My lo arrived 4 weeks early by C-section & is 3 weeks 3 days old. I am breastfeeding (very MSE!).

He sleeps nearly all the time, apart from waking for feeds every 2-3 hours. I feed him, burp him, change him if required, offer the other 'side' if he is still awake, burp him. 95% of the time he falls asleep at the breast. In the day, I put him in his buggy or bouncy chair. At night, he's in his cot in our room.

Does this sound normal? Everytime someone comes round to see him, he is invaribly asleep & if he wakes, he is rooting. Well-meaning relatives are telling me I am feeding him too much & should give him a dummy instead of feeding him everytime. They also make comment about him sleeping too much so now I am developing a complex about it! Some relatives are in danger of having their visiting rights revoked........

Its a lot harder than I thought it would be!

Sounds normal to me. I was going to recommend the smile and nod technique, but Sammy beat me to it!

We had our last messy play session till after the summer holidays today, which was lots of fun. We've also been to tesco, and the park and the allotment. I'm just finishing off Izzys tea (she isn't very hungry today for some reason, but I'm going to try and tempt her with yoghurt in a mo ;)) and having a sit down.

We made a friend at the park - 4 year old girl who kept cuddling me and wanting to sit on my lap. Izzy wasn't sure what to make of it, but liked having someone to play with. :rotfl:

Ajaney - definately normal my little one constantly rooted whenever her eyes opened at first - ignore helpful relatives - yr baby is just content.

Had a BAD day took both kids to park 5yr old had a tantrum when i had to breastfeed, then had another tantrum and then I flipped and marched her (screaming of course) out of the park. I had remained calm during first 2 incidents as shes adjusting etc etc but by the end I was screeching like a banchee:mad: Now she is playing with OH and being sweetness and light for him I'm feeling very down today going to go for a soak in the bath

Smile and nod technique takes quite a bit of mastering - I recommend the bite yr lip and grimace, followed by the swear under yr breath tecnique - I'm working on those at the moment :p

Thanks so much to all who replied, the 'smile & nod' made me smile, the 'obviously boring' comment made me laugh out loud! People don't realise how upsetting their comments can be, especially when they start discussing it between themselves while you are in the room!

I will carry on without a dummy for now, my head held high! I want to make sure breastfeeding is properly established before we have a dummy or bottle.

Welcome ajayney! Congratulations on your little one. How are you recovering from you c-section? I agree that it sounds totally normal to me. Some breastfed babies do just like to feed a lot, especially in the early days when they have teeny tummies.

Messy play sounds fun Ladybird. I'm having a sit down too while OH baths Henry.

    Hello!
Recovery is going fine now, the first week - 10 days was a bit uncomfortable but I feel ok now. Going to think about contacting the doctors surgery next week to see if they can ok me to drive.

My baby screamed the place down the first couple of time we bathed him - full on horror movie screaming! Now he sits there with a 'I-don't-like-it-but-I-will-tolerate-it' look on his face. Not brave enough to bath him on my own yet!

My step mum had that surgical procedure and it is pretty untraumatic and it helped her loads!

Thanks. I was a bit scared of it as the doctor said it would be a last resort, so I though it must be something a bit nasty :o

I spoke to my Mam and she said the physio might give me a ring thing that sits up inside and holds everything in place. I'm scared of coils and don't like the sound of that :o

Thanks - I'm pleased I went and this doctor was more understanding. I'm 34 (nearly 35!)

That sounds pretty normal for a newborn. All they do is eat, poo and sleep for the first few weeks.

The first lesson in being a mother is to learn to ignore the well-meaning relatives and do the smile and nod thing!

Master breast feeding ignoring now, as next you'll be doing nappy changing wrong, weaning him wrong, dressing him wrong, putting the wrong bedclothes on and a whole host of other wrong things. I think all of us on here do things "they" tell us are wrong, but we smile and nod and we're happy and our babies have survived :D
Here I go again on my own....

Hey, did someone mention a meet in B-ham? :) If so I could actually come :)

We've had a bit of a break through with Elliot, as some people have heard he took a dislike to baths and has been screaming his head off for several months and it's been a nightmare. Well tonight I decided to change tactics, and sat him on the draining board in the kitchen, he only cried for about 20 seconds then started kicking his feet in the soapy water and actally enjoyed it! :) Woohoo! He's nice and clean, and happy for once!!

He's been a right pain in the bum today though, grumpy as hell and tired constantly. Think being ill has taken it out of him. It's my MIL's birthday tomorrow and me and Elliot can't see her :( Wish we were better.

Hope everyone else is ok :)
