Can i drive a car home without an MOT

Just checking in advance before i waste my time maybe looking at a car, but basically a friend just wants rid of their old car, but its run out of MOT however its taxed until the end of July.

So would i be able to drive it home without an MOT, wouldn't drive it anywhere else but straight home, then not drive it again until i could get it booked in for an MOT.

Thanks in advance for any replies..

Nope, you can only legally drive a car without an MOT to a test station to get it tested, tell him to get it MOT'd so you can drive it, that is of course assuming you have insurance.

For real? You'd MOT a car you were giving away for free just so whoever wanted to pick it up could do so (as long as they had insurance of course).

Personally I'd drive it home, but if your squemish, book it in and take it directly to the test centre.

The OP asked a question I gave them the answer, if someone wants to drive it without an MOT that is their choice, what people choose to do in real life is up to them as long as they are prepared to accept any consequences if caught.:)
  • No one is going to put an MOT on a car they just want rid of, I wouldn't if it were me getting rid of it.

Am i allowed to tow it home? and actually you gave her the answer, im not a him.

Provided 2 or more of the roadwheels are NOT touching the tarmac (towing dolly or trailer), and providing the driver doing the towing has a license that allows him or her to tow a trailer, and providing the car doing the towing has a kerbside weight that is equal to or greater than the vehicle doing the towing - yes you may tow it home.

Why not if you offer to pay for the MOT so you can then drive it legally.

Sorry about the gender have edited my post accordingly.:o
  • I would have to tow it home as i have that on my licence, my OH doesn't, he didn't pass his test until 02, where as i got mine in 99.

I think the last bit i should cover, our current car is a vectra, i would imagine the weight of it would equal or be greater than that of an escort.

They just want rid of it and want it gone this weekend as is taking up space, they've just got a newer car.

I've asked to go and see it but not heard back from them yet, id imagine most MOT stations are closed on Sundays and im betting id struggle to get it in anywhere tomorrow.

If they weren't that desperate to get rid of it and could hold onto it for a couple of days until i could get it in somewhere for an MOT then yes id offer to pay and collect it mid week or whatever.

There must be thousands of cars running around on the roads with no MOT, either expired or people have just forgotten they have run out, as you say it is taxed and providing you have insurance the chances of being stopped would be pretty slim, depending on the distance if you want to risk driving it then that is your choice, some people would others may not.
