  • IMHO I think the secured loan = your equity
If you remortgage you need to consider a couple of things - over how long and houw much MORE interest you will pay in doing so. But I personally would think about a remortgage some of the equity to cover the secured loan.
As it has been suggested to me speak to CCS at the top of the page to sort out the payments for everything but the secured loan.

Have you tried claiming for Tax Credits? I know it may not be alot but it would help.

Also I guess with your OH being self emplyed he has to soort his own Tax an NI contributions - if he has been paying it regularly he may be able to claim JSA.

I would suggest to you other half that he looks for work within a firm or company in the building industry. Also look at https://www.monster.com for tips on writing a good CV.

Also is Sky still in a contract? If not or when it ends get a Digi box!

Also your Gas/Electric seems VERY low. Do these payments cover each month? Have you had a recent statement?

You obviously drive so the job market is wide for you - even though you are still working you can always apply for a different jobs

You want to do something about it - you have the will to succeed.

Short term - Have a scout around the house for anything that you havent worn in over two months, anything that is still in boxes/loft you could take a trip out to a carboot sale (will give you something to look forward to and you will enjoy it)

How far do you live from work? Could you cycle or walk? Or does anyone live near you who could give you a lift? This would save on petrol.

I have sorted some stuff out for ebay today, so that is going on there. Im going to get them to pay by chq, so i can afford to post the stuff out. I havent really got much as i sold nearly everything last year to get us out of a pickle. But every little helps!!! So Tesco say!

I have applied for a new credit card with 0% but only was offered a small amount, it wouldnt cover any balances so i dint take it up or i would of just spent it for food, so i guess i stopped us getting into deeper debt.

I spent friday night trying to get a bar job or something, but to no avail as it was mostly daytime work. I work mon-sat as weekend work is not really an option unless it is a sunday. I am looking though.

Thank you for your kind words, im just feeling really down at the moment, it is all getting a little too much for me. But i feel better getting it out into the open.

    Thanks

Well done for not taking on the new credit card- see, you're heading in the right direction already. I know you're feeling down and I recognise myself as a newbie in your sad and fed-up mood. Everyone on here was so kind to me when I posted for the first time and I will never forget that. Stay with us and you will get the support you need.

    ok so

    income is 800 yours
OH 816 (assumed 14,000 gross less 30% tax etc)
    from OH's mum 126

    total 1,746

spending including all debts is 1,454
so you should have a surplus of about 300
    which you obviously dont have.

so the first thing to do is to find out where the money is really going

start a spending diary (both) and write down absolutely everything you spend.

things not on the budget that you need to consider

    food
    tax tax
    MOT
    servicing,
    petrol
    clothes
any work related things, lunches, snacks, coffees, parking, travel
anything spent at xmas, present, going out, takeaways.

must find out what you spend before reaching any decisions.

Food is around £350 this includes pet food and pack up for us both
Cannot afford a service on car
Mot in April cost £200 with repairs
Car tax £95 every 6 mths
Glasses for me £120 last year
    Crimbo last year £300
We cannot afford to go out but we tend to get a takeaway each week £40 per mth
    Thanks

Oh is on a CIS card, so his employer pays his tax for him but the NI is paid when he does his tax return, so JSA is an option as is tax credits. I thought you could only get them if you have children, but it doesnt help to have a try.

    Thank you

I dont drive its OH so i do walk to work. he nneds the car so petrol costs cannot be cut down as he is having to work out of town, sometimes it doesnt even cover petrol and toll costs.

My gas/electric is cheap, i am on a payment plan with them. We had a lot of probs when we moved over and didnt get the electric sorted for nearly a year, hence being in the red with them too. We owe around £500, but cannot afford to pay any more. They are okay with this payment plan at the moment.

Sky is still on contact, but runs out in Feb. My friend has given us a digi box, so we are sorted then.

    Hi
I'm not one of the usual people who comment on SOA's but have you tried to cut down on your food bills? it's probably worth looking on the money saving old style board. Also do you really need to spend £100 on your Friday night release? unfortunately i think this has to be cut. (don't hate me!)

But overall, well done for facing up to such a tough situation, i remember the fear and dread when i had my light bulb moment, to some extent i'm still reeling. But people here are very helpful and understanding, so big hugs from me, hang in there, it will be long road but you WILL get there.

My friday night release is for the month, so its £25 per wk. We have been drinking one week and then none the other, so we are trying. Its just the only fun i get all week. My chance to relax a little. But i know it has to go if i am serious about kicking this into touch.

    Thanks

I'd say food costs are too high and you need to look at cutting back on this and night out (sorry)

Have you rung restaurants for waitressing jobs (xmas is coming so there will be evening work plus tips) and usually you will find they offer a staff taxi home.

As a lot of night classes start in sept/oct could you or OH look at some part time retraining or building up your skills?

I am looking for ways to reduce the food bill and have posted on the old money saving forum. I know we spend too much and it needs to be cut. As i said earlier, friday night is a cheap bottle of vodka, coke and fags. We caanot afford to go out and £100 is for the month not a week. Im not that bad!!! We are trying to cut it down to once or twice a month though, as well as trying to quit the fags.

Im straight on the blower about an extra job on monday, i have been looking online, papers etc this week. So hopefully something will come up.

We had a look at night classes for Oh, but you have to pay for them. I know that in the long term this is the only way to go, but short time we cannot afford it. Help with course fees is non applicable as well as they pool both our incomes and we dont qualify. We have tried this for both of us recently.

Thank you for your ideas, i feel so much better just talking about it.:D

Thank you so so much, this is so kind of you, but his phone is locked to orange. So get it to the boot sale and help pay off your debt.

I cannot believe the help and support of you guys thank you all so much for your ideas and help.:A
