Oh, right I just saw your post above anout letting agents...Mmmm I don't know how you'll get around that one unless you can look for private rentals...maybe someone will come along soon who knows of someone who is looking to rent out a property. I'm too far away from the city centre to see adverts put in shops & things.....let me put my thinking cap on - maybe local newspapers will be the way forward.
I'll let you know if I find anything!!
Thanks, your a star
I guess I'm used to Edinburgh, there are a lot more properties here that aren't with letting agents, I just assumed it'd be the same but I'm finding it hard to find any! Gumtree has a couple I've emailed.Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0 -
Aw Drea, you're leaving us to go live with people who walk about with leeks sticking out their pockets and say 'boyo' all the time. :rotfl:
Just kidding Welsh peeps, I'm sure you're all lovely and don't have any more leeks than the rest of us.
Can't help you Drea but just wanted to wish you well anyway and hope you get something affordable and nice.
Good luck with it all.
Hello trouble!
Thanks, I don't have long to get it sorted out so panicking a bit but hopefully it'll all work out in the end.... then I'll start getting homesick :rotfl:Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0 -
icwales is the website for the local rag, the western mail and echo. They have a classified ads section you can try, although i think the bit on their website links through to fish4homes
grangetown, canton, riverside, cathays, cardiff bay, splott and certains parts of roath are all within a 30minute (or less) walking distance to the city centre, which could help save money on public transport. Cardiff is a lot, lot flatter than edinburgh too! cardiff buses are pretty good. an all day 'day to go' ticket is £3 last time i checked, or 14 for a weekly ticket. That covers you for bus travel all across the city, and out as far as penarth, sully and dinas powys. i think the monthly pass (only available with a direct debit) is slightly cheaper again. within the city itself, buses are a more effective way to travel than the trains in most cases.
as an aside my BIL works for admiral in cardiff and really enjoys his job, they seem like a great company to work for.know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
There a fair number of private landlords in Cardiff who dont do credit checks. What size place would you be needing?0

It's just me, so a one bedroom or even a studio flat, I honestly don't mind.Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0 -
It's been a while since I rented in Cardiff as a student, but by far the best property I had was through Flat + Homes (I rented several properties over a ten year period, but eventually bought a house). I don't recall them having carried out a credit check back then, but things may have changed now. You may find that producing a letter from your employer is sufficient, along with the obligatory month's rent in advance and deposit.
At the risk of upsetting some Cardiffians, I'd avoid renting in some areas of Splott, Ely, Gabalfa Estates, Rhymney & Tremorfa if you're living alone. As pavlovs-dog pointed out, Cardiff has an efficient public transport system - you'll easily get a place less than 25 minutes away by bus - and Admiral's city centre offices mean that any bus/train will take you within a few minutes (or even seconds) walk. You may also want to consider living further afield - Pontypridd is only a 30 minute train journey away, and the reduction in rental prices may cover the increase in public transport costs.
My OH has several properties in Cardiff, but unfortunately all are 3 bed+! Best of luck with your search! (And congratulations on your new job).0 -

A bit farther out is Pencoed. When my son was working in Cardiff the other week, his weekly train ticket (Pencoed-Cardiff Central) was £18 and it's only about a 20 minute journey.0

Yes, I live 2 minutes from Pencoed, Llanharan also has a station and would be cheap, Also, Pontyclun - they are all on the main line into Cardiff!!0 -
Drea - the flat in Cathedral Rd that Fitzmum posted is really worth a call. It's a fab area and virtually in the centre of town. I'll check in newsagent windows tomorrow if I can. Best of luck - I've only heard good things about admiral too.0
