Hi Welshies

I've been offered a job for Admiral in Cardiff so I need to relocate and quickly (3 weeks).

Problem is, I have no idea about any places to live, I've heard of lots of the bad parts but not so many of the good and I'm on a budget!

I'd rather live alone and pay no more than £400 per month (which is still stretching things a lot) which obviously makes some places out of reach. I know it's cheaper to live further out of town but I have to take travel costs into consideration and it seems to even out really?

Any ideas about which locations to be looking at?

Thanks!

Well, Rightmove is a good place to start for ideas - the areas in the West of Cardiff are pretty good, for instance Canton is more like a town in itself just outside the city centre. If you go as far west as Ely you might be in aras that are a little bit run down A bit further out and north, Llandaff North, Whitchurch etc are nice, but might be a 20min commute into the city centre.

Roath and Cathays are student areas, cheap eats and accommadation, but depends if you're looking for that.

Cardiff's lovely to live fair play, not many areas are really bad - even Grangetown, that had a bad rep long ago, is nice enough to live in, I do!

    Hello Drea!!

Well done on the job!! I saw your post on the employment board - Admiral is meant to be a brilliant company to work for!!

Cardiff is a great city - I'm sure you love it, like Llefenni says most areas are ok, perhaps one or two of the 'estates' like Llanederyn can be a bit rough in areas but most areas around the centre are fine.

Do you drive? Or will you be relying on public transport? I would have thought Roath or Cathays would be your best bet for your budget.

I live about 10 miles out of Cardiff and there is the odd rental property within your budget but would this be too far to travel maybe.

Your best off having a look online and if you find something you like the look of then post where it is and we may be able to advise whether its ok or not!!

Good luck with your search xx

    Thanks :)

Public transport I'm afraid. Finding it difficult because most places are with letting agents and I wouldn't pass their credit checks :(

Phew!! There you go! There's a few for you to be looking at within your budget - these were on findaproperty.com.

Mead property management seem to have the most - maybe it would be worth calling them & explaining your circumstances. I imagine they would be able to tell you how far away these are from the city centre and your place of work.

Even though I'm about 10 miles out of the city please feel free to contact me if you need any further help - I think your very brave to up & leave your hometown to come down here and as a mum of 2 children I'd want people to welcome & help MY kids if they went to live in a new city!!

    All the best xx

Oh, right I just saw your post above anout letting agents...Mmmm I don't know how you'll get around that one unless you can look for private rentals...maybe someone will come along soon who knows of someone who is looking to rent out a property. I'm too far away from the city centre to see adverts put in shops & things.....let me put my thinking cap on - maybe local newspapers will be the way forward.

I'll let you know if I find anything!!

Aw Drea, you're leaving us to go live with people who walk about with leeks sticking out their pockets and say 'boyo' all the time. :rotfl:

Just kidding Welsh peeps, I'm sure you're all lovely and don't have any more leeks than the rest of us. :D

Can't help you Drea but just wanted to wish you well anyway and hope you get something affordable and nice.

Good luck with it all. :)
