=weegie.geek;34330301]I've tried to be civil.....long, rambling post....

Did you actually explain to the OP how, with her pattern of usage, that the Toshiba would be 'faster'?

What if she have a few applications open, would the Toshiba be faster?

What if she was watching a DVD, would the Toshiba be faster?

Future proofing? So you are telling us that 99.9% of the machines around right now are obsolete. :rotfl:

I'm sorry, but your posts are too long and boring for me to be bothered to read.

Just tell the OP why she should spend £100 more on the Toshiba.

As I've stated before I like Toshiba machines and JL's 2 year warranty.

The MSI specification is superior with the exception of the CPU and we know 'one swallow doesn't make a summer'. It's the sum of all the parts that is most important.

The fact is that your initial advice was just biased and erroneous and it fell to me to correct the errors and redress the balance.

As I have written before.. what matters is the customer's experience, not your conjecture.

I've had three laptops with no problems. I'm sure others have similar experiences. Of course they will always be lemons. But I am happy to have a machine that is checked before being sent out than a new lemon that hasn't.

The crux of the matter is that it's a money saving website and there are bargains to be had. People can check online if any machine has a history of problems.
But this is just a silly debate as Argos is an honourable company and will deal with any reasonable concerns.

I have to agree with the above poster, although customer services may be good (sadly not the case with my local argos), I'd rather not spend time complaining, being computerless etc.

Also a brand new computer surely has a longer guarantee? (although I may be wrong on this)

I do think closed has a point about maybe there being life on your computer although it is understandable just buying a new one is easy too.
Closed does have an excellent thread on how to speed up a computer which may be worth looking at. I particularly like the memory cleanup programme. Also the next two steps are quite good too (which should be done first):

    instructions below written by alienRIK:
Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ma..._anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/2894/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

Yes, you are. Most are for one year, unless you pay for more.

You're like a mad girlfriend, worrying about scenarios that may never happen. :)

How will your scenario be different if you bought a 'new' computer?

It doesn't seem to be getting through to you that you have exactly the same statutory rights as you would if you bought new.

So, give it a rest. Just buy new if it puts your mind at rest. :)

Meanwhile myself and thousands of other have received incredible bargains.

I have a laptop that originally cost more than £500 I paid £250 during the switchover from Vista to Windows 7. It still had the original plastic coverings. Updated to Windows 7 for less than £30.

But in the UK (from experience), you have to expect things to break quite quickly (less than a year) which is not the case in some other countries where electronic appliances rarely break. Therefore you would need that extra guarantee to protect yourself. Statutory rights are useful but not if you're complaining to someone who doesn't understand them...

Well I'm sure you'll still purchase from the clearances and I won't!

    What "extra" guarantee??

Extra as in time under warranty as you suggested earlier.

But the warranty is the same as new. DELL have one year as standard. These are one year. What are you talking?? Do you really not understand?

Oh thought you said guarantees were longer - read the negative wrong.

But still doesn't change my wish to buy a second hand possibly broken product.
