Toyota Yaris v Honda Jazz v Hyundai i20 - All Auto
My mum is wanting a new car. It has to be auto or semi auto (she does have a full manual licence but cos of arthritis struggles with the clutch pedal)
we are looking at
honda jazz es 1.4 5 dr i-shift - list price 14,269 incl met paint
toyota yaris 1.33 5 dr MMT - list price 13,420 incl met paint
hyundai i20 1.4 5 dr comfort auto - list price 12,415 incl met paint
she has test driven the hyundai and liked it, the hyundai is a full auto where the others are semi-auto. we are test driving the honda today and the toyota on saturday.
i wondered which one of these would offer the best discount. hyundai are unwilling to shift much on price we negotiated £450 off the list price, but they wouldnt even put mats and petrol in as well.
i notice on drive the deal i can get the yaris for 11,450.14 but my mum doesnt trust buying off the internet and is willing to pay a little bit more for piece of mind. Will i get anywhere near that at toyota at the moment? i know they normally dont shift much on price, but with all the recalls etc... are they struggling?
Many Thanks in advance

I would go for the Hyundai which has a proper torque converter auto box. These automatic clutch semi-autos might save a bit of fuel, but they are jerky and unpleasant to drive, imho. I tried a Mitsubishi Colt with MMT and hated it. The Hyundai seems to be well regarded in the motoring press, and you get a five year warranty.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

I'd go for the Jazz but I'm biased - we've had one since early 2005 (non auto) and it's a great car - much bigger boot (399 litres - bigger than a Golf or a Focus!) than the Yaris (257 litres) and the i20 (295 litres) and plenty of leg room for the driver and passengers. The Yaris has similar leg room in the back but if you slide the back seats forward to make the boot bigger it is obviously compromised.
The Jazz and Yaris should be very reliable. The Jazz does the best in the JD Power Survey's. The Jazz will be more expensive to insure.
The Hyundai is good value (I've had a different model) but depreciation of this and the Yaris at only 41% after 3 years is not as good as the Jazz at 51% after 3 years. So although more expensive to buy in the first place, the Jazz will be worth more when you come to sell.
The Yaris digital speedo is a marmite thing - you either love it or hate it :rotfl:
The Hyundai road tax is £110 in the first year and then £110/year.
The Honda is free in first year then £90/year.
The Yaris is even cheaper - free first year then £30/year.
You are unlikely to get much of a discount on the Yaris or a Jazz at a dealer.
Hope that helps - at the end of the day it's personal preference and we are all differentIf at first you don't succeed, try, try, try - oh bu99er that just cheat0 -
Toyota MMT autos are jerky. Not driven Jazz auto so can't comment. Proper torque converter autos as in i20 are smooth.
You can even buy a slightly older Hyundai and still have warranty left on it.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -
Has your Mum also considered the Kia Venga? The Venga 2 has a 1.6 engine and "proper" auto box option.
I actually test drove a manual Diesel this morning and was suitably impressed. I'm considering purchase of the auto myself to replace my rubbish Vauxhall Meriva - I'll not go into what's had to be done to that under warranty but I 've lost confidence in it.
Kia have a 3 year unlimited mileage, 7 year 100000 mile warranty too which swings it for me.
For me the Kia is much cheaper to insure than the i20 auto. Don't know why because the i20 has a 1.4 lower powered engine?
Kia don't seem to want to discount much either, I've so far managed nearly £800 off the £14100 list for the auto Venga.
That name concerns me a bit, i.e. the Venga Boys!0 -
we have just got back from the test drive and the most honda are willing to knock off are £300 off the list price. And considering the list price went up today by over £400 not that impressed lol (and i checked the main hona site before we went nothing of prce rise on there)
Mum did fall for the jazz though, but looking through what car the insurance group is way off others in the class. What car claim the jazz is a group 16 but the yaris only a 7!!
We are test driving the yaris on saturday morning. So can really compare the 3 then. One of the reasons mum fell in love with the jazz, was the magic seats.0 -
On the test drives do some close manouvering practice - an example parking between two cars, driving into parking spaces in supermarkets etc.
This is where the auto clutch cars can give drivers real problems as moving them a few inches can prove very difficult.
Unlike torque converter boxes many of these systems won't allow you to creep in 1st or reverse gear as they require some gas input to activate the clutch.
Too much gas and the clutch grabs and you shoot forwards or backwards. It can be overcome, but it can be a frustrating system if you can't get the hang of it.0 -
thanks davey mum is already used to the semi auto as she currently drives a vauxhall corsa with the easytronic semi auto. I have to say the vauxhall is the worst semi-auto i have ever driven now i have driven some different ones. It actually put me off autos all together. I love the feeling of being in control that i feel with a manual lol0

well honda have just come back with an offer of 13,670 for the jazz.
still think we should wait and drive the toyota first, now just to persuade mum to wait, and rule with head not heart.
I dont know if its worth giving toyota a ring, if they wont haggle on the price much, she will want to go with the jazz i think. so it would save wasting time driving all the way over there etc...
has anyone haggled with toyota recently?0 -
Tell Toyota that Honda will do the jazz for 12.5k.You've got to be clever and play them against each other because neither will like losing a sale and what have you got to lose?Went shoplifting at the Disneystore today.
Got a huge Buzz out of it.0 -
Go for a 3-yr old Kia Cee'd for half that price and you'll stlll have 4-yr warranty remaining. As good as new
PS: Kia Cee'd won 4th place in JD Power 2010 survey
