I wouldn't throw them all in the washing machine at once, just do what you need immediately and keep anything larger for later, in case you find you don't need it and can take it back for a refund.

I'd also stop buying myself, because you get given so much! Well, I did.

Mind you, we have eczema in the family so that's why I'd pre-wash, and now the boys are older they don't like 'new' clothes so wash them first.

I washed everything - for all the reasons mentioned in previous posts, and also as part of nesting/preparing for baby.

    Bad Mummy here

The only stuff I washed was the stuff that had been the loft from my ds. Anything new that I bought or gifts are not washed - it is the only time they look half decent given that I don't do ironing ;)

I didn't wash any of the new stuff either, only the 2nd hand stuff. And it was already clean anyway i just don't want them smelling of other people's fabric conditioner or their "house" smell.

Ignorance is bliss though, if i'd seen the warehouse myself then i imagine i'd want to wash them lol.
  • Well they do say a little dirt is essential for the immune system and helps prevent allergies so maybe NOT washing makes you a good mummy too!!

i wash all new clothes before i (or anyone else) wears them! If you've ever been in a clothes wearhouse you would be aware of the dust that can gather on them. Its also not unusual to have a bird get trapped in a big wearhouse and where do you think he's going to land (or his poo!). Ok thats a rare occurance but it could easily happen as the storage of clothing isnt as strict as the storage of food products so they could easily gather bacteria.

plus the fibres are waxed and starched while weaving.. and the oil and dirt and dust from the machinery and people handling the fabric/garment. The mice living in the soft fluffy fibres.. who like to poop..

I actually think clothes from the charity shop are probably cleaner than 'new'..

I wash it all.. stuff that has been hanging on a shop rail.. how long has it been there? Who has handled it? Did they have scabies? or poop on their hands?

Would you want to dress a new baby in dirt and grease?

look at the state of some of these factory workers when they come out to go home.. they are hot, smelly, sweaty, greasy individuals.. they've been handling your baby garments!

lol soo funny i'm a non washer too and all 3 of mine are happy healthy kids! Seriously who buys a new outfit and then creases it up on purpose just because it might have factory fluff on it!
Theres not going to be any germs on it they'll have all died if there had been.
Babies are made of tougher stuff than people think it's the bloomin cuploads of washing powder and fabric cond that cause the allergies.

Nope i don't use fab cond either, seriously i'm a mean mummy! :D

washed ALL of mine for all three of my children ( now age 11, 3 and 2).. and all in Fairy! regardless whether second hand or new!!!!

Even now, when they have new bedclothes or anything, I always wash before wear... they always have the "new, stiffness" otherwise!

Mind you, I bought my OH some new shirts for work yesterday and had to wash them in fairy first too!! :D

Oh I do wash new bedding before it goes on the bed, but only because it's like putting cardboard on your bed :D :rotfl:

I always wash baby clothes first...

I haven't used fabric conditioner in over 5 years, what's the point in making a big who har about washing chemicals off clothes and then putting more on? ;)
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.
