In addition to the points raised above washing baby's clothes with the same powder that you use will also give them a sense of recognition when you are cuddling them.

All brand new clothes whether for babies or not will have some sort of finish to the fabric to make the actual making-up easier (to stop the fabric sliding through a machine) so it is generally recommended that any new baby clothes are washed before putting onto baby, as they have particularly sensitive skin.

You wouldn't want your newborn to come out in a rash all over just because you didn't bother washing it's vests & babygros would you?!

Blimey how to put guilt on someone, hey ho a bad mommy before baby has even arrive :D

ok not washing any of mine, all brand new or given by friends and has all been washed before.

TBH baby will be in it a short while before being sick all over it and then will get washed.

Brand new clothes can habour just as much as something 2nd hand.

Fabric will have been sitting around for God knows how long.

Then it's been handled to have been made.

Then it's been handled and stored God knows where.

Then it's been sent or shipped over here and sat in God knows what conditions for how long.

    Then it's handled when unpacked.

Then it's handled by the public.

So just because new clothes look clean, doesn't mean they are ~ far from it infact.

I'm only pointing out that new clothes aren't necessarily clean, even though they look like they are.

The OP asked for advice and that's what i've given.

Sorry if you took offence x

    A non washer here!

Didn't wash any of DS's new stuff. He's very much alive, didn't lose any limbs and has his skin fully intact. He has no allergies or diseases... and doesn't hate me for being such a bad mummy!!

I'm not going to lose any sleep over not washing bump's new clothes either :) Even with the bad mummy MSE police enforcing their views on here ;)

I didn't with any of mine, and they're all fine. In fact, if I had washed what I'd bought DD1 I'd have lost out because most of it was too small as she was enormous.

i wash all new clothes before i (or anyone else) wears them! If you've ever been in a clothes wearhouse you would be aware of the dust that can gather on them. Its also not unusual to have a bird get trapped in a big wearhouse and where do you think he's going to land (or his poo!). Ok thats a rare occurance but it could easily happen as the storage of clothing isnt as strict as the storage of food products so they could easily gather bacteria.
