Yeah it's not too bad the school does try and consider everyone's needs. and they always give us plenty of ntce and the option to pay in installments. But I do agree some kids will always miss out due to the costs.
and the collective passports seems to depend on the school involved.0 -
I know this thread is a few months old, but I just did a search to compare school skiing trip prices. My son told me in advance that he would like to go on a skiing trip, cost is £684. They will be away 8 days but travelling by coach, so 6 days in resort I think. I was dreading it but when the letter came, the trip is for Easter 2012, so we have a nice long time to pay for it. Skiing is something I dont think all 4 of us would get the chance to do, so I'm happy for him to go. He is in year 8 and turned down a trip to Spain last year which was focused on water sports. £684 includes all travel, insurance, food, 4 after ski activities, equipment hire and lift passes, so all he needs is spending money.
My Mum has offered to contribute some money and DS has his name down for a skittles job so will contribute some of his own money. He will get a ski jacket, goggles and anything else he needs next year for Christmas. I agree its a lot of money but we would have sacrificed our summer holiday for him to go on this trip if we had to.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -

I dont think thats bad for a skiing trip.. the lift passes themselves are very expensive. plus the insurance for them and the teachers will come in at a lot too.one of the famous 50 -

I didn't think I was that old (28!) but when I was at school, the idea of school trips abroad was unheard of in my school.
We had day trips out for history to local places, Carrickfergus Castle, Dunleight motte and bailey, the Ulster Museum, things like that, and parents had to pay something like £5 for the bus fares.
Any friends I've mentioned this too, who went to other schools, said the same, that trips abroad just weren't even thought of.
Wonder if this is a Northern Irish thing to not do trips abroad, or an age thingcarpe diem

Am currently halfway thru paying for DS2 trip to the Normandy D day beaches. £315 for 11 July - 14 July 2011, 4 days 3 nights. Orginal letter sent before they broke for the summer holidays so plenty of warning. Again collective passport, tho he does have one himself.
Makes the skiing trip seem reasonable???0 -

When I was a kid, I'd have preferred this trip to a skiing one. My school took us to all sorts of places, such as Greece (for those of us doing Latin, Greek and Class. Civ.), Russia, India, Whistler in Canada (skiing), Pompeii, and more.0 -

For those of you talking about ski trips, my Uni Ski Club trip to Val Thorens is only £399, for a week, including lift passes and transport (can't remember if it was coach or plane), plus another £90 or so for ski hire. Makes school ski trips seem outrageous. I went on a school one about 5 years ago that I think cost my parents £800.0 -
Not really about original topic but since a lot of folk have been commenting about 'free' museum trips costing £15 odd. The cost of the coach is a huge factor even in small trips. We're only allowed to take our classes on one trip a year. Mine in the Spring will cost £17 and £12 of that is the coach to a destination about 20 miles from school!0

Luckly my other sons school trip is a free one. The GCSE art class are going to London for the day. Meeting at school, walking to the station, then train. Boys being dismissed from the station at the end of the day.I fully expected to be asked for a contribution towards teh cost of the train fare. But nope it is a real free trip!!!0
