I like the South Downs a lot - but prefer Normandy really for the food - best food in N Europe in my humble opinion - and nice beaches, scenery, architecture as well. Newhaven to Dieppe is a nice ferry service. Dieppe is v pleasant.

If you look at that website you'll see they highlight 3 that have got the Blue Flag awards...but I'd say all the beaches in that area are pretty good.
Don't think it's that easy to say exactly where you should stay - depends what sort of accommodation, what budget, how near to the beach do you want to be (walking? 5 min drive? within 25 miles??). If you want hotels then you're looking more at the resorts, if you went for a cottage you have a lot more choice of areas as there's some beautiful places that are more remote, there's farms with accommodation.
Suanton Sands, Croyde mentioned in other posts, Woolacombe Bay area is also nice, quite family orientated and has hotel, holiday park, holiday cottages (again for easy reference I'll refer back to that website I posted previously)

Have a look on trip advisor - even add a query to their Devon board.

I am not sure where exactly to go. I want family-orientated things like a wildlife park, sandy beache(s), and just attractions like this. I don't want to end up in the countryside with just a beach to go to.

I would massively appreciate any help

Bideford has The Big Sheep, and Milky Way parks; there's Lundy Island - boat ride out to a nature reserve area; Combe Martin wildlife and dinosaur park; Ilfracombe - Watermouth Castle; South Molton Quince Honey Farm; Lynton/Lynmouth - Lynton at the top of a cliff, Lynmouth at the sea and mouth of the famous gorge, nice little seaside town and a cliff railway linking the two; wandering a little way into North Somerset there's Minehead - larger seaside resort and from there the West Somerset steam railway along the coast.
There's really loads in the area - I'll refer you again to the website I pointed you to which has details of all the above and more, and also accommodation details

Just back from Paignton and had a fab time. Lots to do. Zoo, steam railway, plenty of beaches and Torquay not far away. Have as quiet or as wild a time as you like.
  • I'd be heading for the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset.
I used to camp at Durdle Door, which has a fantastic rock formation and nice clean pebble beaches for swimming. You may also like to look at Swanage and the surrounding area, for places to stay.
The isle of Purbeck has some great places to visit, such as the Blue Pool, Durdle Door, Brownsea Island, Tyneham Village, Corfe Castle and even a steam railway. The beaches or Studland and Shell bay are also probably some of the best sandy beaches inthe country, although there are few facilities, so take your own drinks & food.
You would also be close to Bournemouth & Weymouth which have plenty to see and do.
For in-expensive places to stay, well, camping is always available that way and many people have simple fields with an outdoor toilet. We found a nice farm near kimmeridge and paid £5 a night for 4 people. Was very no-frills though.

I've got a holiday cottage in Wadebridge Cornwall. It has fantastic river views, is right on The Camel Trail and is great for families and exploring. There are still 2 vacancies left before September.
    4-11 July is only £495.
18-25 July is available at a discount price of £695 to MSE subscribers.
Please google 'Waterside Wadebridge' if you are interested.
    Thank you!
