"Punishing" bankrupts

I think very few people on these boards intentionally "rip" companies off.
Everyone on here seems to really care about the position they are in and have used BR as a last resort after struggling for years and years.
But yes there are people (and we probabley all know some) who will ruin it for the rest of us. That is the same with all walks of life. They have no guilt and will end up in the same position obtaining money they have no intention of paying back.
Unfortunatly companies have no way of distingishing between the 2 parties.
I agree that if you pay up front for a service, it should have no effect. The same logic contiunues that soon you will not be able to shop in Sainsburys due to your BR !!!I'm no expert, but i'll give you my opinion, my support and my experience. Its all i have.

I know I may be the odd one out, but I do not feel like I am being punished. Yes it is more difficult to obtain things like insurance, but with the internet, for me it has meant sitting at my pc until I find something suitable. When I was first advised to go BR I felt like my life had ended. I honestly could not see anything "good" coming from it, but after finding this site and another one I use, I realised that may be it was the best thing for me. Luckily I found alternative insurance for both my contents and car, and was still allowed to pay by instalments. I managed to change my utility supplier 2 months after BR, but everything else, BB, phone and mobile phone has stayed the same. Only people very close to me know I have gone BR, to everyone else nothing seems to have changed. BR was something I never envisaged, and has taught me a very valuable lesson, I am just grateful that I have got a chance to get my life back and hopefully build on from here.
I totally agree Dojo, I never thought things would ever be the same again!! Such an emotive subject isn't it and can agree with 'both sides' of the discussion, but for the peace of mind I have now after BR I accept what we have to now abide by lol x"If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride"

I admit - Theft wasn't the best but didn't want to put murderer or pedo....
One of the hardest parts about bankruptcy is how you feel about yourself. Which is why I objected to being compared with thieves (or murderers or !!!!!s!).
One of the most surprising parts about bankruptcy is how all the officials didn't make me feel bad about myself. In fact the OR was really very sympathetic to my situation.
But, as someone else said, I think, sometimes the worst "punishment" is the one we give ourselves. And I'd really like to stop hating myself. Since going BR I've been noticeably happier. I don't think I realised just how incredibly stressful my debt had become. In the 12 months leading up to my BR I didn't spend a penny on increasing my debt: I paid nearly 60% of my take-home pay on debt repayment. Had I not gone bankrupt I would have had to do that for many more years to come.
The OR said that in his view the cause of my BR was the breakdown of my relationship, which resulted in a catastrophic drop in my income. As soon as that happened I cut up all my cards and sent them back to the bank and I struggled on making the repayments, never missing one.
I don't know if I'm typical of bankrupts or special. But I'd say that all this makes me more than worthy of some trust and maybe access to online banking that costs nothing and risks nothing for the bank!0 -

Please dont think I think you are a bad person I don't. I dont think anyone on this page is.
I went BR, I had my house repo'd and I ended up kicking my husband out.
And Im now on happy pills trying to get me through this plus the 2 chonic health problems that I have as well as working a 40 hour week, where are jobs are not safe!
Since I took the plung to go BR my life has improved so much, health wise, happyness, I dont worry about going to tesco with just about £3 in my account, thinking I hope they have the spoils so we can eat.
But I can't get cable/broadband/landline/mobile/ anything else I want - and my dad has offered to pay upfront for me
But I'm happier - I can live my life without looking over my shoulder
