Anyone had SPD before and found anything that helped?

I had this when I was pregnant with DS last year, the midwife said it was SPD, reffered me to the hospital for physio, at physio there were about 15 of us, they refused to say it was SPD and no longer give out support belts, their words were "we prefer people to use exersize, not belts" the pain started for me at 20 weeks and it wasn't until I was 34 weeks that they gave me one of those tubi grip things to wear, which helped loads.
Although most of my pain was during the night, my hips would crack a lot and wake me up, then I would be in agony for hours.
Hopefully your not in Leeds and will be able to get some help from your MW and reffered for physio, a birthing ball also helped a lot for me while I was sat watching the TV on an evening.
The pain completely stopped for me about 2-3 weeks after having DS though.0 -
I just wondered if there is any connection betwix SPD and large babies ?
My son was 10lb(2 weeks early too thank god so I didnt have to be induced as planned) so if it wasnt for my excessive stretchiness ,labour could have been difficult ,as it happens ,it was a piece of cake .The only other person I ever met with it also had largish baby .
Maybe its natures way (rather painful way )of preparing the body for an easier delivery of a larger baby ?0 -
I had spd with my 3rd four years ago. I was referred for physio which I was really disappointed with as all they did was give me a belt!! This was the summer of 2006, which was really hot, and that belt was just awful to wear.
I tried all sorts of "alternative" treatments ( we have family friends that did me free or greatly reduced cost treatments) including chiro, reiki and cranio sacral therapy. It all helped thankfully!!
Luckily for me the spd vanished after giving birth, but I then had probs with my sacral iliac joint which was absolute agony.......0 -
Had it with all five of my pregnancies.
Finally found the miracle cure on pregnancy number 4 - accupuncture.
People said about the support belt thing, but that wouldn't have helped me at all as it was bad even before I had developed a particular bump (at around 13 weeks with subsequent pregnancies) - plus I had hyperemesis so that idea was never going to work as it would have caused a raft of other problems.
Take it easy - the pain will still be there 8 months after birth if you're anything like me.
But accupuncture definitely worked.
And no, none of my babies were large - largest was 7lb 14 smallest was 6lb 5."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

I am and have found the support here brilliant - I suppose it depends on who you get to see and the policy at the time.
OP - hope things are a little less awful today. Just to reiterate my point earlier about looking after yourself, I had to take the afternoon off work today cos I could feel the pain building. The key is not to overdo it and REST when you need toUpdating soon...0 -

I had it mildly with the last pregnancy fingers crossed this time i seem to have gotten away with it although the ligament pain where my legs meet my body is horrendous this time. I'm not sure how helpfull these tips will be as i say i only had it very mildly last time but i found if i stayed in the same position for more than ten minutes at time my hips would seize up so i had to change postion frequently only small movements but it helped and also if you have to use stairs go down them backwards i dont know why it helps it just does. If your getting in and out of a car then place a plastic bag on the seat it will help you swivel out of the seat whilst keeping your knees together :-):jFriends are like fabric you can never have enough:j0

Shame cos I am in Leeds went for physio yesterday but was a waste of time. Have to phone up again for a 121 appointment learnt nothing yesterday that I didnt already know. Think im def gonna get a sicknote for a few weeks till at i can get an appointment at least then go from there. Been up all night with tooth ache so at the moment struggling to find where it doesnt hurt.
Do they not give out the support belts in leeds at 121 appointments. Work said this morning to get one from mothercare but if you have seen any of my other threads im not really in a position to do this and cant even use HIPP grant as not seeing midwife till 28weeks now to even fill in form.0 -
Oliviasmummy if you pop to the surgery on the day the midwife attends you can normally pick up a form from her with out much fuss or need for an appointment. I would phone and ask the recpetionist if she can get it for you and you will collect it :-):jFriends are like fabric you can never have enough:j0
