Anyone had SPD before and found anything that helped?

  • I had this on my second and third pregnancies. Please do not think SPD is trivial and try to soldier on or you could be setting yourself up for permanent problems ie it doesn't always go away after the birth. My third son is 9 and I have only just got it sorted (fabulous NHS physio). However, I can no longer do aerobics or any exercise like tennis/ badminton that involves stress on the pelvis. Until my recent physio, there were times when getting out of the car was sore. I'm not saying this to frighten you, just to stop you thinking - as I did - that this was just something to be toughed out. If you are in pain, listen to your body and rest. Go and get advice and don't be fobbed off. I will try to post a link for an excellent SPD group who put me on the right track.

Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy. You'll hopefully be on of the very many women who don't hear from this nasty pain again once their baby's born.
    Best wishes

I had it with both. Belt and physio exercises helped as did aqua arobics. Crutches when walking and generally wishing the pregnancy was over helped. Bizzarly when in labour the pain eased

    Hello

Ditto a lot of the comments, I had this with both pregnancies and ended up with belt/crutches combo, belt works very well but is annoying and hot and itchy in the heat. Aqua aerobics worked well but make sure you go to special ante-natal ones run by a qualified person as there are certain exercises that will make it worse (anything that involves opening your legs) (there's a joke in there somewhere LOL)

Good luck, I know how awful it is but it will go away once your baby is born.

Hi i was given aromatherapy and reflexology at my local hospital for SPD, it did work and made me feel great for 2-3 days after. I also had a support belt but did not find it to help very much. It also took me a few months to recover the main issue being putting the brake on and off the pram lol!

Try not to do too much in one go and take all the help you are offered! i hope things ease off for you soon x

Thank you for all the lovely replies. Been off work today as I didnt have a good night last night sleeping with the pain. DD went to childminder still today so I have been resting. I decided that me and my baby come first. Hubby got my gym ball out too and have been sat on this to take off some pressure. I spoke to the doctor about pain relief and he suggested taking soluble paracetamol for a week as they get into your system alot faster and hopefully physio will help. I have to call back after a week as he doesnt want me taking the soluble ones for long periods as it may affect my blood pressure which they are monitoring anyway due to pre-eclampsia symptoms in last pregnancy. He said alot of people are sick with co-codemol and codiene but they dont really like you to have those when pregnant. So have to try physio and soluble for a week and go back if not better.

Apologies for my first post too, I was in a rush to post before I had to leave the house and my spelling is appauling. So well done for getting through it lol.

I'm currently 33 weeks pg with babe#2. With hindsight my SPD started at 19 weeks but it didn't become a real problem til 23 weeks. Struggled on to 25 weeks at work then went sick for 5 weeks. Felt so horrendously guily as I'm a Secondary teacher and this was over exam time. I'm back at work now but on massively reduced duties - I'm amazed, as were my union, that the Head teacher let me near the place.

I'm having physio weekly including accupuncture, I pay privately for a chiropractor (which has been amazing, and what the Hip grant is for in my opinion), I'm on crutches, wear the belt and now have a wheelchair which I hate but doesn't half make getting about easy. I'm limited to being able to walk about 10 minutes per day without the pain flaring up but it's amazing how much you can get done in a 10 minute hobble :rotfl:. Other things that have really helped are tying my legs together when I go to bed and putting an ice-pack on my bits; helps pain and healing I believe.

Right now, I would advise that you call in sick and stay off sick until you get a handle on the pain and you can do basic things comfortably - this could easily take a month. You are fully protected during pregnancy so there's nothing your employer can do, and you can stay off sick until 36 weeks when your employer can kick start maternity leave. When you go back to work, your employer MUST do a risk assessment and do everything they possibly can to help you. If they can't accommodate your medical needs they need to suspend you on full pay until 36 weeks.

By the way, not being able to walk more than 10 minutes a day sounds like a massive deal but it's amazing what you get used to once you adapt - you'll adapt too and you'll work out what does and doesn't help you. I feel much better at 33 weeks than I did at 23 weeks.

Good luck. I'll keep an eye on this thread and let you know if I reember anything else

my daughter had it - she did have some relief with acupuncture (it IS available on the NHS, but you have to ask). physio seemed to make it worse. I am so sorry I cant help more, but there doesnt seem to be a miracle cure. have you tried sitting on a rubber ring? the kind they use for back probs? its just a thought - may help?
I wish you all the best with the rest of your pregnancy.
  • hi, i'm 32 weeks pregnant with spd which started at 20 weeks. I have been taking paracetamol and codiene but this is no longer helping especially at night so have now been given tramadol to try. Have been seeing the physios regularly and have had some hydrotherapy which has eased things slightly.

They are considering inducing me at 38 weeks as i really cannot stand this anymore and its making me depressed, probably not having more than 2 hrs sleep at once over the last 11 weeks hasn't helped either.

I would say go see the physios as the hydrotherapy has helped and they are getting me a tens machine so i can hopefully cut down on the painkillers!!!
  • I had this with both my pregnancies-17 and 16 years ago. I don`t know if that makes me the one who had it the longest ago lol.

My symptoms started at about 20 weeks with DD. It started with a dull ache and then progressed to actually feeling like my skin was pinched by my bones. Every time I moved it was like the skin was ripping. I told my midwife about it - expecting to be told there was nothing wrong - but she said it might be SPD, but I was offered NO help.

By the end I could hardly walk without the awful aching and pinching. I told the midwives when I went into labour that I had SPD and the only advice they could give me was to give birth with my knees as close together as I could....

Roll on a few months and I was pregnant again with DS. The symptoms started early - at about 12 weeks - and continued the same all the way through. Again I wasn`t offered any gadgets or gizmoes.

After I had my son, I`m afraid to say that I did continue to suffer for maybe 2 more years. There was still a bit of an ache - especially when my period was due - and I ached badly after long walks.

I guess that maybe back then it wasn`t as well known, and doctors nowadays have many ways to help. I would take everything on offer and I would try to stop work early too.

Oh...and on the funny side(the physiotherapists are going to cane me for this) I can now do the splits. Never could as a child, but found I could as a fat nearly 40 year old. I`m 45 now (and still fat) and can still do them lol. I can only guess that bits of me are still stretched lol. (that sounds REALLY bad lolol)
