Use your email to ask them questions before you book and before you go. Tell them you don't want to have extras at the airport when you haven't got the time or an internet connection - if they are needed sell them to me now! Make sure the answers are clear - if not ask for further clarification. Then print and take them with you. When the rep tries the "sell" produce the papers and ask why you now need extra?

Unfortunately you were probably at fault. I would imagine the economycarhire package an excess waiver with their rentals.

Therefore if you have an accident you would pay the excess to the hire company and claim it back from economycarhire.

If Budget were not aware of this (and it's likely they wouldn't be), they will try to sell you their own excess waiver meaning you end up with two lots of insurance. Additionally they could have tried to sell you insurance for tyres, wheels and glass which is not normally included.

The key to all agent booked inclusive car hire is to say no to everything. The car hire companies make extra money by trying to sell this sort of stuff to weary travelers even suggesting you can't have the car without it.

Say no to everything....if they don't let you have the car without the insurance, pay on a credit card and write "sold under duress" against everything you sign. That way the credit card company will probably refund you.

I think you're being a bit harsh on the OP.
This is a common con in Spain. They worry the renter into thinking the have no insurance in case of an accident or (gold car) clutch failure, exhaust anything basically. I've been going there for years and was caught out by Advantage, a new rental out fit and part of Hetz. The Rep told me it was a legal necessity to take out something, even though I had my own yearly CDW. She muttered something about it being refunded when I returned the car. It's all a rip off and Economycarhire are well aware of it and do nothing. They couldn't give a toss once they have that up front fee.

I had assumed the yearly CDW policy would cover!

    What is the solution ?

    It does.

Call the trading Standards office on 08454040506. Tell them exactly what happend. I had a silmialr experience and called them this morning. Economy are in Breach of contract according to TSO as it states on their voucher you have full insurance. The credit card company also share the responsibility under section 56 of the Consumer Credit act.
Send a recorded letter to ECH stating "breach of contract" and that you've lodged a complaint with TSO with copies of all the relevent paper work, demanding a refund plus compensation for your time, include the reference the TSO will give you. Do the same to your credit card company stating Section 56 of the Consumer credit act. The trading standards office will give you the info.

Please do this or nothing will change and I'm fed up of being robbed.

    I love these threads! :)
Maybe not what the Poster wants to hear, but u were simply conned because most likely, u look the con-able type! :(
You have CDW already, the Broker sells you a voucher from the renter, the renter includes the insurance, the broker doesnt, there just, well a broker!..... standard practise....
However, all sales staff in Spain/France/Italy, etc have another kind of insurance, its called big A4 double-sided small print, fancy CDW+ , and CDW++, and super CDW, and super super CDW, and super super super CDW...
These are the things that cover u for losing a key, wrecking the wheel, a child seat u dont want, PAI, etc etc....
Its stuff u dont need, but the sales peeps can see your easy prey.....

I've hired in Malaga, Gerona, tenerife, gran can and Lanzarote, and listen to the same rubbish from each sales guy, and i never book direct, i always go through brokers....
Normally after about 40 seconds or so, i offer to translate the word NO in a universal language to any extra's they try to sell me.....

The contract was with Economy. They have an obligation to the renter.
If you don't know what the law is why comment in a smug serves you right you must look con-able way?

I don't undertand why people make these comments this is supposed to be a helpful forum.

Contract with the broker was served: IE: Car with insurance. Contract complete.
Renter paid for extras with rental firm, and got cheated.... ie: rental firm is the issue.
3 years of law, and i guess i dont know it hey.....

This is a helpful forum, and a very good one, but when someone tries to blame the other for there mistake, rather than ask for advice to get them out of there mistake, it warrants the correct response....
