very interesting stuff - repeatedly it says take proof of disability - well I am classed disabled but have no visible disability, and having been repeatedly challenged of my use of disabled parking, and asking if Disabled get concessions at various places, and trying to explain my illness, the last time I renewed my Blue Badge the lady at the council solved the problem. This may be peculiar to Powys County Council in Wales, but they issued me with their acceditation and gave me a small credit card type card stating I was physically disabled, a registration number, and contact numbers for them so they could be contacted to confirm the holder is who they say they are etc. This has proved incredibly useful, and saves showing DLA entitlement as this states how much money you get too, other ppl dont have to show their wage slips for things as proof !
ask you council if they have such a scheme0 -
as proff i have laminated a current letter stating only my name and address and the heading, i mentioned to someone a while ago about producing a card0

It may not be in every county but here in the Midlands we can get £65 each towards a holiday of our choice. We are going away in November and have booked a cottage for £200 for the week but it is only going to cost us £70 thanks to the above. You can only apply once a year and it has to be after September 1st and you must provide an invoice sayig you have paid for it.
We also get to go to Hydrotherapy for £3.30 for the two of us as hubby gets in free.
Hope this helps others.

Dear All,
Part of my role involves the development of the Disabled Persons Railcard and how we can improve the reach and range of people who can use the card.
A few quick points- The general principle of the card is that it is aimed at those disabled people who face the greatest difficulty when using rail services - not disabled people in general. This means that it is not available to everybody but to those who qualify.
- We use proxy criteria to verify qualification but we keep these criteria under constant review. For example, I noticed in the thread earlier on there was mention of 'registration as Deaf' as one of the criteria that used to apply. The problem is that most local authorities no longer keep a register of deaf people so lots of people who wanted the card were unable to get it. We therefore changed the qualifying criteria so that Hearing Aid users could qualify and the evidence we asked for was a copy of their NHS Hearing Aid battery dispensing book.
- Mention has been made of the discounts for wheelchair users and visually impaired people. These discounts still apply but only cover Standard Singles or returns or Anytime Day returns. The Disabled Persons Railcard gives access to a broader range of discount tickets.
- You can also get discounts at any Holiday Inn hotel but have to book in advance to get this. A similar scheme exists for Ramada Jarvis.
- On theatre discounts most London theatres will accept the Disabled Persons Railcard as evidence of qualification for discounts.
- If you want more information ask for the leaflet 'Rail Travel Made Easy' which is available at Railway Stations or you can get more information about the card (and download an application form) at the disabled persons railcard website (just do a google search).
- We're hoping to add to the range of additional discounts associated with the card so keep an eye on the website.
0 - The general principle of the card is that it is aimed at those disabled people who face the greatest difficulty when using rail services - not disabled people in general. This means that it is not available to everybody but to those who qualify.

There are some really good suggestions here, though I don't think any of them apply to me! I feel very stuck in the middle, as although I have visual problems which impact upon everyday life, it's not to the extent that I'm considered disabled. I qualify for the free bus pass as my driving licence was revoked, and the Open University think I may qualify for Disabled Students' Allowance. Interesting how the term 'disabled' is used and how it means completely different things to different people!0

Diasabled railcards as someone else has mentioned gives you a discount. You could always call up the train companies as well to book assistance in advance if you need any kind of assitance that includes wheelchair as well as luggage.
For Eastcoast the number is 08457 225 225 (select option 2 and then 5) textphone is 08451202 067.
Trainline seems to be a popular site to book cheap tickets
FAQ is how come there isn't any one place that you can find ticket types and restrictions that covers all the train stations and after doing a lot of research I came across this site and it seems to be the only 1 that covers that subject.

Hi I get DLA high rate mob - and I'm eligable for motability, neither me nor my husband can drive though - and I can't afford the fee for the lessons or the cost of the tests. Anybody know of anything that could help - it would be my husband who will have to learn, he is my carer but despite being stuck in bed without help they won't give me middle rate care, so he isn't officially recognised (third appeal + welfare rights officer so bases covered there).0
