Our council has an 'Additional Needs Database' and so he gets a HAND card, this gives you access to carers forums once every few months as well as I am registered too so our council definitely has a register, tbh I am not even sure how we heard about it. They send a card which we can use to get reduced admission/free admission. We go to a place called BIG Space in Harpenden and even though they are a different council they recognise the HAND card and he gets in half price.

The hardest thing I find is that he has to miss out on things because they do not have the staff to deal with him. There are some summer camp days locally he cannot go there as there is no-one to keep an eye on him specifically (and he runs off in unusual situations) and also at Beavers this week he is only having half a day at the Fun Day. There is a girl who is going to look after him for the afternoon after she finishes her own camp so I am really grateful for that. I do wonder how long this will go on for, whether he will be missing out on things forever. Makes me feel sad for him as he wants to do these things but the support is not there for him to be able to do them so he misses out. I even took him to football and he ran out of and they just let him so we could not go there any more.
  • The National Trust will admit the carer free. Also if you really like going to these lovely places then you can buy a disabled person an annual membership for £37.50 and then request a carer free card which can be used for any carer. Well worth the money. We have bought one and saved tons of money.
  • Leeds Castle in Kent.....Buy a disabled child/adult ticket which is between £10. to £15, but it last a whole year and go as many times as you like. In addition the carer gets in free and their ticket lasts all year as well. Another super bargain. We did that one year and it was fab.

In Oxfordhire we have the inclusion support scheme, this means that the council will pay the wage to the club for a one to one worker to enable my son to attend out of school hours clubs. The thing about Beavers is the staff are volunteers, my son likes to run off so I stay just incase.
There is another new scheme called enablers, which is a trained person that attends an activity with the child, its a bit like a befriender.
I'm not sure if they have any of these in your local area?

The M6 toll also has a similar system, where you get a tag for (I think) £9.00 per year. As it costs about £4.50 each time you use it then regular users can save a fair bit.

Ahem :) post#36 "Blue Badge holders can get 'free' travel on the M6 Toll but they have to first apply for a special pass costing a one off 'admin' fee of £15. It's up to the individual if you think it is worthwhile spending that £15. I only live about a mile from the Toll end junction 11a and have never used the road."

As an addition, I only found out about this when I renewed my blue badge earlier this year. Prior to this I did not know about the discount.

I would also like to add that anglers can get a discount on the Environment Agency rod license. Look for the concessionary box.
Kevan - a disabled old so and so who, despite being in pain 24/7 still manages to smile as much as possible :)
  • My husband was referred for Exercise By Invitation by the Physio Department, for the local Leisure Centre. After 16 weeks he now has free membership to use the Gym whenever he wants. Each apparatus he uses has to be programmed by the Experts who run the Gym, (for his own safety). His disability is balance, after having both knee joints replaced, which have damaged his tendons/muscles and he needs to build up some strength in his legs.:j
Who is your Local authority please ?? ( fellow N. Walian) !
  • Caledonian MacBrayne allow those with the blue badge for their cars to take their cars on the ferries for half price
Thanks for this, we are going up to the Island of Mull next week and this will save us a lot

Because it only exists for sight impaired (no idea about deaf?) people - which is done through the eye hospital.

There is no such thing as being registered as disabled.
You are covered under the DDA for any long term Chronic condition.

As teakbank says, there is isn't such a thing as being registered disabled anymore - there used to be as I was registered disabled!

Yes there is such a thing as being registered disabled, I know as I have a daughter who is registered, she has a 'yellow' card stating her nature of disability, issued from Social Services. This is the card I show to receive discounts on entry fees.

There's a lot of conflicting information here.

There IS still such a thing as being registered disabled. It's a voluntary scheme now and is managed on a County basis.

Certain circumstances will allow for automatic registration, (receiving the DLA care component at the middle rate is one in Hampshire, but I don't know if the rules are different for other counties), and those registered will receive a card to show they are registered as disabled. In Hampshire these cards are yellow but I don't know if this is the same elsewhere. For those not meeting the automatic qualification criteria, additional 'proof' may be required.

Here is a link to the page on the Hampshire County Council site that explains how to find out more or apply for registration:

    http://www3.hants.gov.uk/adult-services/disability/register.htm

Swimming is free for a disabled person and their carer at Tadley swimming pool and at Basingstoke Aquadrome. The pools both state in their literature that a disability registration card is required as proof of disability. I have one so I've never tried to argue the case with an award letter, so I have no idea if that would work.
