Unable to send emails from Microsoft Outlook

Options
Hello, I have recently been unable to send emails directly from microsoft outlook express. I keep getting the error message of ..."

Sending 'reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

The only thing I can think of was a recent update to eindows but I don't know whether this was just coincidental.

I am receiving emails fine.

How to I fix the problem ?

Many thanks

Mark

Who is your ISP? Have they recently had a policy change for outbound email moving it off of port 25 ?
  • ISP is Tiscali. Fot the other question .... I don't know if they have changed their policy and I don't really understand what you mean :o(

Marky, I would check your current settings against these:

    http://support.talktalk.co.uk/cgi-bin/uk_tiscali.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=235&p_created=1132935688&p_sid=YR7EwD3k&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9ODAsODAmcF9wcm9kcz01OTkmcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PTEuNTk5JnBfY3Y9JnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=&p_topview=1

Don't change anything as of yet, but post back here if you find any differences.

Also, worth checking you can log into to their webmail and send messages - just to rule out any account mess-ups. I read something last week about an email server account issue with Tiscali/TalkTalk last week on a security paper, but I can't find it now I want it!
  • Sent a test message using outlook to my works email and that has come through OK.

Gone through the link. Whlst is looks slightly different, all the information is the same ... sorry ...

Am I reading that right? You were able to send a test message from outlook to your work email? Did you still get this error:
"'reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'"
    ?
  • Sorry ... logged into the tiscali site and sent it that way. I didn't send it through outlook express.

You see where I got confused there?

Just a couple of points to clarify: Can you confirm that Tiscali (aka 'TalkTalk') are your ISP and that you have not changed provider recently?

Can you post the smtp server entry from your Outlook settings - found in: Outgoing mail (SMTP):
  • Sorry for the confusion ...

Tiscali are my ISP and I have not changed recently ... been with them for about 5 years ...

The smtp server entry is ..."smtp.tiscali.co.uk"

    Does this help ?

Not being a Tiscali customer I'm not best qualified to help you and I am not familiar with any quirks of the Tiscali smtp server. What I can say is my telnet tests to it on port 25 are unsuccessful with it closing the connection nearly immediately. This would suggest to me they either have a fault/issue(I would expect to see lots of google complaints if this were the case), they are using a non standard port (which is not unusual, but if you not changed anything I'm not convinced this would be your issue), or they are limiting access to their outbound smtp sever to their own customer IP ranges.

This may be gobbldy gook to you so my suggestions to help you are limited to:
    1. You are trying to connect directly using your Tiscali connection and not from some other provider/work/VPN/Proxy?
    2. You have checked that the credentials you are using in Outlook are correct (server, username, password)
    3. Check any self updating products like personal firewalls / anti-virus are not to blame by temporarily disabling them
    4. Contact Tiscali support and run through any settings with them

Other forum users who are with Tiscali may be able to offer you much better advice than I possibly could - so apologies I can only give some generic checks.
  • Just a thought, I am currently staying at my inlaws house using their wireless router to connect to the internet ... would this make a difference ?
