Tories are certainly getting stuck into our benefits system...

Glad to see your self confessed cleverness and education allow you to construct a persuasive argument for your point of view.

See we are back to playground antics and language again....can we please (as requested before), discuss this in an adult manner! We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
That's absolutely true!!0

Fair enough.
My point was that nobody should have the option of just claiming benefits when there is work available that they are capable of doing, but just consider to be not good enough for them. Turn down the job, stop the state payments.0 -
Another leech emerges....
Me ?? Dream on. I support my family of 5 ( yes 5 ! ) children AND my recently laid off OH by myself. No LHA, No tax credits, no nothing.
However, I can still see the wood from the trees. And I HAVE been there in terms of a waster ex walking off and leaving me with two children to look after. Wasn't my fault he !!!!!!ed off ( took the giro as well as a parting gift)..
But, ( when I was like ) other single parents out there and those on disability benefits you seem to despise, dismiss and write off as 'scum, wasters and should starve'. Lots of us actually do make something of ourselves. Folks like SingleSue and others here, that keep on plugging away, educating themsleves, trying to get on in life and always, always doing their very best for thier kids whatever... humble me and are to be admired. You tar them ALL of them with the same very broad brush. It irks me greatly people being written off like that. I was too.
( Don't start about 'genuine v's benefits as a 'lifestyle choice'.. you haven't the faintest idea which is which ).
And I'm also very aware, that if anything happens to me, or my income ( touch wood ) my family WILL struggle again, and I NEVER forget it. It's very easy to feel smug and self-righteous when one is is in a 'secure' job crapping on about being a 'tax-payer'. But welfare in reality is only a few pay cheques away for the vast majority in this country and no-one, but no-one has a crystal ball as to what's 'round the corner' in life in terms of income or health.
There ARE millions of people who are unemployed who send off 20 or more job applications a week. Just as there are millions of parents out there who can't find the childcare required for shift-work or people with chronic illnesses who'd give anything to be back in work again rather than sitting at home feeling worthless.
There are also employers out there who'd rather not employ those with children ( or even those that 'may' want to have them ). Employers who would rather not take a 'risk' on someone who is disabled, and employers who would rather pay £2 an hour under the table fruit picking to immigrants rather than minimum wages to locals who have rents and mortagages of circa £500 a month and families to feed. It cuts both ways in terms of jobs/employment.
High rents and not enough social housing are 'bumping up' the benefits bill greatly. But this also, is completely outwith the remit of those that have to claim LHA. Those rents are set, by those that receive it. Landlords, not the claimants who simply put the figure the landlord wants on the claim form. What else can they do ? There's no-where else to go, no social housing to be had unless you join a 4 year waiting list, 30 years in some places.
I think that you, and those like you on these forums, are basing your 'scum' arguments on a small minority. And that's it. I think you're being too black and white about welfare and those who claim it. Far too harsh.
I will be eternally grateful for the benefits I received back when I and my two children then needed them. I moved on, and many, many of us do, and many of us will do whatever it takes to get off them. A fact that seems to be lost on people like you.
And, it should be also be recognised, that there ARE obstacles to be overcome, employers want the 'best' for the job. And they don't tend to include single mum's or those who have been out of the game with a chronic illness or disability...and it isn't always as 'easy' as 'just' taking a fruit picking job as a 'one fits all solution'. Far, far from it.
As for 'debating in an adult manner'.. you certainly are not mate.
Oh and the government ? Haven't thought things through properly. Reforms are badly needed, but they've been too 'simple' about it. There will be a lot of unintended circumstances and lots of them for the worse for genuine claimants as well as the 'shirkers'.
Cuts in benefits do not in any way, shape or form, instantly generate more jobs. Those that think it will are living in la-la land.It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

There are things the collective "they" got used to buying, that they now will have to think twice about.
The collective "they" won't be going without, they'll just have to forgo things, like hard-working people do all the time.
I think you mean 'fewer'.0 -

Where are the jobs?
It might make your post sound less infantile if you can answer that question.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
