Why don't you try a B&B or pub on the outskirts - Beverley, North Ferriby, South Cave are all nice (compared to Hull that is).

I need to be as close as possible - we only live in York - I am trying to get a few more minutes in bed!

    AT the leisure centre..

40 minutes is a long time extra in bed on a Sunday morning! :)

Going the night before would enable us to work out where we were going the eveing before - we cant be late as have to sign on at 7.45am so would have to set off from york at around 6.30-6.45am - would be nice to get up and have breakfast somewhere before we go - but only if I can find somehwre at a good price..

Leisure centres with swimming pools, there's Haltemprice, Ennerdale and Woodford.

Then there are a few swimming pools, Albert Avenue, Beverley Road and East Hull Pools.

    Its Ennerdale...

You're looking at North Hull area then, there is a Premier Inn on Kingswood which would be just a few minutes drive away, but it is £53.

If you don't mind staying above a pub this one

    http://www.iknow-yorkshire.co.uk/accommodation/6638-cross_keys_public_house-east_yorkshire.htm

is literally a minute away from Ennerdale. I've never been in it though so can't say if it's any good.

There's also this, which is quite close,

If you want to be near to Ennerdale then you need to be looking at Beverley Road area, but if you decide to stay in the centre of Hull it will only be a 15 minute drive anyway. :)
