We had cause to take out unoccupied home insurance , a rip off in itself, when my mother went into a nursing home and subsequently passed away.

No rip off there. You dont have to unless there is a debt secured against the property. Then it is common sense.
The house has been sold and we rang a week ago to cancel the policy and I cancelled the direct debit. 2 days later I got a letter from premium credit threatening me with a default notice so they had clearly tried to take a direct debit 3 weeks before it was due and then seperatly we got an email from the insurance company saying we owed them an amount which was just £7 less than a full months premium for one weeks cover.

The direct debit cancellation is electronic. Premium Credit would know that the d/d is cancelled before they are told the policy is cancelled. Hence the letter that was sent.

Possibly but if Delh complained to Premium Credit that its had caused significant distress by its response(which, in the light of the bereavement is understandable), it might find itself in some difficulty if the matter reached FOS.

tbh, it might actually help others if they did complain as they might amend their procedures.

It is quite a common thing with insurance. A lot of banks and originators use the electronic notification and that hits the system before the letter to cancel does. Hence a cancelled direct debit letter goes out first.

However, in the case of bereavement, the bank should use the death code and that should result in a different outcome. Delh's cancellation was not in the mothers name though so it would not have used the death code. More likely the mandate cancelled code.

  • Anybody having problems with Premium Credit then all send your emails to the CEO of Premium Credit. I'm, sure he'll eventually get fed up of us all emailing him.

    He's totally ignored mine!
