Hi, what are the indicators on your modem/router saying when you have lost connection? In particular is the internet lamp on?

Sorry haven't checked, will look next time it happens.

Also when you can't get online can you still log into the router, its usually something like 182.168.0.1 or similar.?

Sorry don't know what this means, am not very good with computers:o

Your router has a number of LEDs on it. There will be power, wireless, internet, and up to 4 Ethernet lamps, what can you see?

You might want to try working through this:-

When it happens can you still connect to the router's config pages? http://192.168.1.254

If so, it's probably the modem losing sync. http://192.168.1.254/cgi/b/dsl/dt/?ce=1&be=0&l0=1&l1=0 should show you.
If it's losing sync it's a problem with your line, either internally or externally. Something not filtered, a broken filter, dodgy extension wiring, or something else interfering with the line.
Call 17070, then choose option 2 from a wired phone, not cordless. You're listening for noise on the line and cordless phones filter it out. If you're hearing cracking etc, chances are that's what's making you lose sync. Call BT and get them to fix it.

If you can't access the config pages, it's probably the router overheating. The thompson router Be gave me overheats constantly and needs reset, I believe the O2 router is a similar model.
Changing the orientation of it or moving it away from any sources of heat is the only option apart from replacing it with a better router without a design flaw like that.

  • Hi penrhyn,

The internet led was flashing when there was no connection, all other lights were green (except wireless).

Ive checked the link you posted and have basically done everything on it. I lost the broadband assistant from my pc last year when we had to have it all wiped, I've tried to re-install it but it doesn't work. 02 still insist there is no problem their end. I'm getting fed up with it now.

  • Hi weegie.geek,

Thanks I will try to do what you say next time it happens. The router is getting very hot though and I mentioned this to 02 but they said its normal, I've never noticed it before though.

It is normal for the Thomson routers, but they're cheap crappy routers. It's the only thing about Be's service I can complain about.

I replaced it with a Netgear, and IIRC positioning the router front down, so the cables are coming out of what is now the top, worked best.

OK, If the internet light was flashing then its the router that has lost the connection, flashing indicates the router is trying to resynchronise with the exchange.

By flashing I mean a regular sequence of off and on, not the irregular flashes you get when the router is passing data.

Try logging on to the router as Weegie suggests, and find your line stats, let us know what the downstream speed, attenuation and noise margins are.

Try connecting to the Master test socket to see if things improve.

It may of course be that your router is dying.

I bet you have it laying horizontally. I had exactly the same problem with my o2 thompson router and it turned out to be a cooling issue. I was very dubious when it was first suggested to me as the potential cause but sure enough I turned it up on end (secured with some blue tack) so that the base has free airflow and its been fine ever since. No more resets for me :D

Thanks penrhyn, will try what you suggest and let you know the outcome.

Safesound - have turned it upside down to see what happens. Am logging off now so we will see if it's still connected when I get back later.

    Thanks.

All that comes up when I click the above 2 links is HTTP/1.0 401 AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED. I give up, I don't know what I.m doing or what to look for, think I'll just change ISP as 02 are not interested.
