Help re-keep losing connection

Options
Hi Everyone,

Can anybody help me out with some advice regarding losing my connection.

When I first turn on in the morning and try to connect to the internet I get a message saying cannot display the page with a box to click saying 'Diagnose Connection Problem'. I click this and then get a message telling me to switch modem off and on again and wait 3 mins, I do this and connectivity is restored. However, everytime the PC is not being used for a while and goes into standby, the connection is lost again and so have to keep repeating the above throughout the day.

Have contacted my ISP and they say there is no problem their end.

Anyone have any ideas please.

There has been a spate of this with TalkTalk (if that is your ISP) - there are dozens of threads about it on their support forums.

I reported a problem about it myself and they came back to me with all sorts of possible reasons, none of which were relevant. They increased my line dbs from (standard) 6 to 15 and that did not resolve it.

Eventually, I was sent an email from someone who claimed that, after doing some techie research while suffering the same problem, he believed that TT had inadvertently got some of their internal switching set so that if a line went idle for three minutes or more it was automatically disconected. He claimed to have contacted TT and told them of this and that they had acknowledged the problem and corrected it.

Miraculously, just before receiving that email, the problem went away and I have not been troubled since - so there may have been some truth in what he said.

Hi David, My ISP is o2 and I have just spoken to them again and they insist there is no problem their end but could be a problem with my network adapter. I am not in any way a computer wizard :oso this doesn't mean much to me. Have just been looking at Device Manager and have unticked a box that says something like, allow this computer to turn off this device to save power, so I'll see if that makes any difference.

to let windows manage the connection, you will need to enter your O2 network key again

I thought I'd sorted this by unticking the box as mentioned above but it's still happening. Anyone got any advice or solutions. Device Manager says the network adapter is working fine. It's only started happening for about the last 2 weeks, should I try restoring the computer to a previous save point and see if that makes a difference? Could a virus cause this, although nothing is showing up in the virus scan:mad: Last year I had a virus and had to take it in and get the whole lot wiped and start again so I hope that's not the cause.

    Any help greatly appreciated

Hi, what are the indicators on your modem/router saying when you have lost connection? In particular is the internet lamp on?
Also when you can't get online can you still log into the router, its usually something like 182.168.0.1 or similar.?
That gum you like is coming back in style.
