Haggle or switch?

Hi there savers,

This is my first post so please be gentle with me ;-)

I have a dilemma. I'm on Telewest broadband paying a poopy 25 pounds per month for 2megs.

Have been splurging this for 3 years now.

They have no migration code and according to them and madasafish, it will take up to 10 days to cancel Telewest and up to 10 days to install madasafish.

Three weeks offline would probably cost me more than the saving so I'm inclined to haggle with Smellywest.

Saw some great NTL haggle stories on this section of the forum.

Any similarly succesful telewest stories to share or associated advice?

Many thanks!

Jonnybgood xx

Yes definately haggle first - all the broadband main players are in a state of panic following all the 'free' offers by the likes of Talk Talk, Orange and now Sky. Just phone them up, ask to be put through to disconnections (these are normally the only people who have power to change the price) and just state you think your paying too much and see what they can do reduce the cost - otherwise your off. I'll post a link to a thread I started which has loads of people talking about haggling their current Wanadoo broadband down....

Telewest charge £17 for 2mb unlimited download. The £25 is for 4mb download.

    See Telewest's website here.

I'm with TW's 2mb broadband and got them to reduce it to £10 instead of £17 for 6 months. I did this because I'm outside 12month minimum term and our landline is with BT. This gave me plenty of choices to choice from if I wanted to go down the ADSL ISP bb route but as the bandwidth on ADSL can be a lot lower than the advertised speeds I've stayed with TW. Oh that and because TW is unlimited subject to a fair use policy which they don't enforce.

I just rung TW up and went through the automated options of cancelling then spoke with some from Customer Relations (ie retentions) and after he asked why I was cancelling the bb I said it was because I can get a cheaper elsewhere from TT, Sky, etc. He then started telling me the downside to moving (most was true but some false but all this is standard procedure). He, at first, offered me 512k for £10 per month and I said no as I'm on 2mb now so it would be like going back to dial-up type speeds as I'm used to 2mb. He then said he could do bb for £10 at my current speed but can only do this for 6months though.

So I took it and I will just ring up again in 6months time if they haven't made their broadband more competitive.

Are you intending to convert from cable to BT? If so, don't forget to add in the line rental when comparing costs (£30/quarter ish)

    Good point.

AM going to bin their phoneline as noone rings our landline and SKYPE is OK for calls to my wifes family in Ireland and mine overhere.
