They are starting to strictly enforce the "Fair Use" provision in your broadband contract. so no change of actual contract or service, just how they are enforcing it. So no notification required.

But surely "fair use" for a nearly £30 a month contract should be greater than "fair use" for a £15 one?

    in an ideal world yup...
But the £15 user might only be on 2Mb and so their ability to downloads huge amounts is limited, so they generally get a pass if they use it heavily for a couple of months

But those on £30 probably get 8Mb+ and so they have more strict limits cause they can download more quicker. They can probably can download in a month what a 2Mb can download in a year!!

So is there no provider in the market offering genuinely unlimited downloads, even at a high price?

I'd have thought that as there is so much online TV available these days many people might inadvertently fall into the excess usage trap.

virgin media offer it on their 50 meg service
I dont know of any othersw but theres probably a couple left

the irony is we have companies telling us digital downloads & on demand services are the future
we have tech convergance and the likes of TV's with built in net access
then we have the ISPs throttling peoples bandwidths for using their BB

Arbitrary limits regardless of how much you pay is a joke.

If you pay more you should be able to upload and download more, else what's the point?

Syncing at 20mbit costs the ISP no more than syncing at 2mbit. It's transit and capacity that costs, over and above hardware costs which are the same for every customer, so if you're paying more, where is that money going if not to pay for you to be able to download more?

I'm lucky enough to be with an ISP with a solid network, a stupidly high threshold for falling foul of the FUP and an impressive degree of transparency. I know that's not an option for everyone, but I wouldn't touch an ISP that treated me so badly just for having the cheek to have a half-decent phone line.

Go with Be/O2's higher packages. You'd have to make a serious effort to download enough to annoy them. They've previously said 1TB/month isn't a problem.

UK Online's LLU service is true UNLIMITED downloads upto 16mb speeds (you might be able to tweek 18gb out of them in some areas!)
    http://www.ukonline.net/premier/

i'm getting just under 13Mb and i've seen myself downloading 100Gb+ a month of Linux ISO's without breaking a sweat!

Only problem is you HAVE to buy their router as well (£49.99) but after that it's £24.99 month.

It's not. There's no stated limit, but they have a FUP like most ISPs.

They do traffic management and throttling, it seems.

I've never had a problem with them over the past 2 years!
I'm a heavy user and never had a problem.

They have stated in the past that the wording in the FUP is for legal reasons but they will never enforce them.

Also they did stop taking on new accounts a few months ago to manage demand (Rather than take on more new users and enforcing limits!) and they expanded the capacity at the problem exchanges.

They are also using the same network as their parent SKY's service.

Their are reports of them blocking heavy users access to "Rapidshare" and other Dropbox download sites. But they have never throttled P2P.

You will get new email addresses from your new ISP, but you can carry on using your old Orange/Freeserve address alongside if you want ....no problem. Just acces via webmail, or set it up as an additional account in Outlook etc.
