Wash them using charcoal ash (from bbq) mixed in with cold water then wash again in the normal way, that should get rid of any residue smells.0

I've been 'jamming' like a mad thing too. My family donate old jars (esp. pickles) and the lids often smell. A solution of water and bicarb sometimes does the trick but I have had to resort to ,ahem, buying the lids from Lakeland...0

Come on people - it's nearly jam season (not here alas as blackberries aren't ripe yet grrrrr) and soon it'll be chutney etc etc etc season and I need jamjars! Whilst I'm all for re-using jars I have found that all this cooking from scratch means that well... I don't blooming have any! Don't buy pasta sauce in jars, or anything else in jars for that matter...
SO - have you managed to find any bargains? Last year I had to resort to buying the smart price beetroot from ASDA and throwing out  the beetroot to get the jars. This honestly worked out cheaper but OBVIOUSLY wasteful which nearly made me cry!DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

I beg, steal & borrow off family, friends, neighbours, strangers;) anyone in fact but coffee jars are good for chutney and as my hubby is a junkie I have a constant supply. I'm sure someone mentioned that Tesco's mint sauce was on offer at 3p but can't recall what size jar its in.Rebel No 220

I still manage to acquire quite a lot of jars from; honey, tomato puree, mayonnaise (cheaper than making
plus I get egg-free mayo for dd), olives and mustard (I like big jars of French moutard
).
I've also been lucky to keep intact 20 jars + lids I bought from Lakeland years ago.
I may try the Value mint sauce route though when stocks dwindle.0 -
DON'T buy the mint jars (Asda-3p, Tesco 19p)!
If you read my thread 'minty jam jars' you'll find you can't get rid of the mint smell from the lids.
We're trying to get through some minty raspberry jam. An aquired taste!0 -
Hi tine,
I've been collecting them from family and friends and it's amazing how quickly they build up! This thread should give you lots more ideas:
