I've seen a cardboard box next to our glass recycling units with a note from someone saying "Please put your jamjars in here - needed for jam making" Seemed to be working!

Lol, Ok, I won't give in to my want for pretty jars for pretty christmas pressies. Looks like the plums are going to be turned into crumbles not jam now anyhow, and the crumble should be easy to sort.... Tesco sell nice foil containers... ONLY JOKING!!!! I'll freeze the plums and then freeze crumble mixture, and then it'll just be a case of baking as and when needed.
    Recipies for plum chutney anyone???

Found one, in case anyone else is interested http://www.recipesource.com/side-dishes/chutneys/plum2.html

For goodness sake ask your neighbours, put up a notice on the gate saying Wanted Jam Jars. or go to the bottle bank and Tesco's or whereever and rob them from the boxes people can't be bothered to post through the holes.
I just can't get over the idea of buying cheap jam just for the jars. There's nowt wrong with scrounging off your friends and neighbours. I do it all the time.

Or what about Freecycle? https://www.freecycle.org.uk. There's probably a dozen people in your local group with stuff waiting to go to the recycling bank who'd be happy to pass them on.

  • the bee suppliers.. Thornes... also sell jars quite cheaply ...for the honey, although they only have a limited range. I would scrounge ,I do it all thetime for jams and pickles
    Wombling £457.41
  • I go down the scrounging off neighbours route. I work in sheltered housing where there are 54 flats. I put a notice on the office door and can easily get 20 or 30 jars in a couple of days. I just make the frilly tops with either wrapping paper or spare fabric and they look lovely when finished off.

Ask on freecycle. I save all my "Bonne Maman" jam jars, usually for Mum's next door neighbour to fill with lemon curd, but if a freecycler was willing to come & get them they would be welcome to them.

It's well known at work that I make jam, and I often find people just leave jam jars anonymously on my desk for me! Also, when I give jam away to friends, I always ask for the empty jar back and usually get a few others back with it. You just need to be careful with pickle and pasta sauce jars, they are best re-used for chutney or pickle because the smell of the original contents is almost impossible to remove - even on the hottest cycle of the dishwasher.

Well having spent all day looking for jam jars so I can make Blackberry Jam I found NONE... ok back to the drawing board, let's check online...
Not hugely cheap but I had a flash of inspiration! I asked a friend!

"ah" she said "I go to Asda's... I buy the Asda value stuff, either stic it in a victoriasponge or throw it out as I can't stand it and then wash and sterilise the jars and get wax disks from boots" Asda value Jam? 17p per jar!!!

    Anyone found any cheaper ones?
