That`s a thought provoking point.
Think of Eden, before Eve tried to get her 5 a day.
Man, the Lion and the Lamb, laid down on the grass together.
Sorry, it`s a fairy story, it never happened.
The reality is the natural law of evolution. Red in tooth and claw. As I write, thousands of creatures are squeaking with fright and fleeing in terror from predators. Sure it is beautiful in its wider sense, but only Man appreciates the beauty of an Eagle. All the Eagle sees is a meal. All its prey sees is a monster.
If they could, other animals would see us as a meal too, and `cull` us by eating us. Personally I`m glad that I can walk to a bus stop without getting eaten by a lion.
`Culls` of `overpopulation`, are not new ideas. The poor were viewed as `overbreeders`, so relief charity was withdrawn. There were `too many Jews`, so gas chambers were manufactured. Now there are `too many new mouths to feed` in China, Africa, and the rest of the Far East, and so attempts are made to deny these regions growth.
You know, if you want to get away from modern electric conveniences, the city, gm crops, herbicides and pesticides, modern crop strains and all the other `blights` that have been complained about on here, there is nothing stopping you.
You could emigrate to rural Cambodia and work 12 hours a day in the paddy fields for a bowl of rice a day. Cambodia is even more attractive because Pol Pot already implemented a population cull.
If you don`t want to burn oil flying you could find a cave in Scotland and live on whatever of Natures Bounty you could scavenge.
Other options? Kill the neighbours kids, they are just more open mouths to stuff. Hell while your at it you might as well kill your own kids. If you don`t have the stomach for that, don`t worry. They`ll be another government along soon that believes `there are just too many mouths to feed`.Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).

Oh Cootambear, I cant help feeling a bit sorry for you.
Not having a go, I accept some of the benefits that you espouse, I just dont want the rest of the baggage that comes with it.
We can already see the impacts of uncontrolled population growth in a closed system. I think you have ignored those impacts in your prior posts. As you once said before, but in this case I mean it, I wont post again on this thread.0 -
To go back to the original point of this thread, I think there is a bit of a revolution going on where people want to know what they are eating and have the satisfaction of doing it themselves. Theres also the ego boost, which we all need at some point, from achieving something wonderful. I get up at 6.30 and feed the chickens, the rescue rabbits and guinea pigs then wander round with a cuppa and see what has grown. When the stress gets too much I find solace in my veggie patch and fill the need to strangle someone from the credit card company by feeding slugs to my greedy chickens.
I think the concept of the Good Life is possible in what ever way you personally can achieve it. You take out of the idea which bits are do-able. Oh and I just got a book about the series from the CC will pop some excerpts up when I have read it.
I love using:D but the best one is:EasterBuncos Im on a diet
Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.

Well once again you've managed a post that is weird, you didn't really answer the question.
Please don't do it now for me though, I don't think I could take another post of yours starting out talking about culls and ending up talking about climbing the Eiffel tower or something.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Who says its a closed system?Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).

!!!!!!
Honestly, if you argued about one point, I'd take you seriously, but you just argue against anything and some of your arguments are just so silly they don't even warrant an answer.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

this is what the thread is all about....lol... like Tom and Barbara in the good Life.... getting away from the rat race, and trying to support ourselves as much as we can.... and we wernt complaining you were.....lol... bringing up Gm crops pesticides etc.... and flip knows waht else ....lol..... the only thing stopping alot of us is MONEY......so after all these pages of dribble.... we have been trying to tell you we are trying to get away from it all.....:rotfl:Work to live= not live to work0 -
Re cost of things. Local cafe expressed interest in my homegrown produce and home made bread and cakes. I've been down there for a chat. They seemed to think that I could supply them really cheaply,ie cheaper than tescos. Unbelievable. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Dont they realise Organic and homemade stuff is expensive???????????????????????
I do think this illustrates the problem though. People are divorced from the reality of food production. We have all been brought up with subsidised cheap food. The real cost is much more. But people dont know because the past 40 years its all been sold at cheaper than cost of production."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0 -

Exactly, although the thing I think is most important in the short-term is to learn new and old skills, whether it be dowsing, growing techniques, fibre mananagment or whatever so that when we do get our dream plot, we can make use of it rather than fouling up and having to retreat with our tail between our legs. And if the world does go pear-shaped or liquid fuel prices go through the roof or become less available, we have some ideas on how to manage.
The transition towners often cite WW2. When war was declared, there was a group of people who had been considered complete nutters because they had been working out how the country could survive if Europe was taken over by the Nazis. Consequently there was an "off the shelf" plan there on how implement and organise rationing and agricultural change. Some of them had been thinking about traditional remedies; a whole committee was set up to collect herbal remedies and foods like comfrey and rosehips.
Not only did they manage to feed the population, by and large, but the fact that the Government was able to take rapid action prevented some of the social strife that could have distracted resources and attention from the war effort.
Ulimately it does not matter whether knowing how to make and use a hay box, improvise a solar cooker or water filter, construct Onkel Willi's amazing immersion cooker or a solar shower from scrap, use herbal remedies, identify wild food plants, process and store food helps me to live more cheaply and more lightly in my current home, in a future "Good Life" or in a time of reduced resources. They increase and broaden my skill set and increase my confidence in the ability of myself and my community to deal with whatever comes. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Is it any wonder that farmers are going to the wall?
We NEED fair trade for UK farmers and producers but I understand that several organisations that promote fairtrade have indicated that they will not support the use of the term for produce grown in Europe. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
