She also confirmed when I asked that a receipt would not be given even when buying cheap CDs or DVDs, even though Woolworths would not later exchange these if they were faulty without a receipt.

Seems daft to me, and a worrying trend. I've always told my children to make sure they get a receipt in case they are stopped in a shop later on.

If your goods are faulty you do not have to produce a receipt, the onus is on the supplier. This was taken from the deti website https://www.detini.gov.uk/cgi-bin/get_story?fold=33&site=9&parent=107&prevpage=384&stid=161&openbus=9&golive=31-10-2003

    You must produce your receipt
Not true - in fact the trader doesn't have to give you a receipt in the first place so it would be unfair to say that you had to produce one. However, it might not be unreasonable for the shop to want some proof of purchase, so look to see if you have a cheque stub, bank statement, credit card slip etc., and this should be sufficient.
  • But the no-receipt policy is for CASH purchases. No record of anything there.
  • Hi, I work there and receipts are printed for anything over £2. I think it's to avoid waste such as a 35p chewing gum, it would print one out each time and more often than not would be chucked in the bin. You can still ask for a receipt and if someone purchases something that they might bring back because of a fauult or wrong size etc, then I ask them if they want one.
