I think you managed it all on your own :rotfl: :rotfl:

Bizarre policy for a shop, quicker to give one then wait to be asked for one??

Any trader is required by law to present a receipt at time of sale.

Much as it pains me to say. I don't think that a receipt is required in every transaction, And I don't thimk it should, otherwise we get buried in meaningless paperwork. ( One of the consequencies of Government in recent years )

However Woolworths are probably on safe ground on this.

That's still doesn't say that they can prosecute people for theft on the basis that they do not have a receipt.

Perhaps some lawyers in the commercial law field could elaborate ?

A trader must give you a receipt IF YOU ASK FOR ONE.

Consumer law allows traders to request proof of purchase if you return an item which is faulty, not as described or unfit for purpose etc, hence if you pay for something with cash, your only proof of purchase is a receipt.

That is why they are obliged to provide you with a receipt if you request one.

I thought the issuing of receipts was also to 'prove' that the transaction actually went through the till, especially as a lot of modern tills no loner have audit rolls.

I can recall signs in Florida (yes I know its probably different) stating that if you did not get a receipt with your change you should call management and they would issue a receipt and pay you 10% of ther transaction back. Again I presumed this was for the above reasons.

I always ask for a receipt, I dont need it for any other reason than I do check the prices.

Since a few people who were not given receipts have mentioned paying with the correct amount, maybe you normally get one if change is required. Maybe the way to go is hand over more maney than the price of the item, even if it would be just as convenient to hand over the exact amount.
I can't imagine what the thinking behind such a bizarre policy could be. The miniscule saving on some transactions must be far outweighed by the extra time dealing with queries as a result.
