no receipts in Woolworths

I don't know if this is just local, or whether it is a new policy but Woolworths no longer give receipts for items paid for in cash and £3 and under.
I bought some drinks and a newspaper today, totalled just over £2 and gave the correct money. I decliend a bag as I try to be green and use my own, but waited for my receipt. The assistant told me it is policy to no longer give receipts on small items and when I asked why she called a supervisor to explain to me (I obviously looked like a trouble maker!). I was concerned that using my own bag meant i would be taking bottles of drink and a newspaper into other shops that also sell them, and could not prove I had bought them elsewhere, I was told if i was that bothered i should use a Woolworths bag, but after a brief discussion I was also told that If I particularly requested a receipt I could have one.
She also confirmed when I asked that a receipt would not be given even when buying cheap CDs or DVDs, even though Woolworths would not later exchange these if they were faulty without a receipt.
Seems daft to me, and a worrying trend. I've always told my children to make sure they get a receipt in case they are stopped in a shop later on.

Sounds absolutely crazy to me. And what about those of us who want to claim back VAT on items like stationery?0
-
They started this ages ago but it was for purchases of under £1.
From what I was told it was purely to 'save them money' on till reciepts :rotfl: Not sure how true this is though!
They've obviously extended the amount to £3 now.
I ve once asked for a receipt when I purchased something under £1 as I needed to claim the money back from work. It was no problem - they just printed me one out.Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...0 -
but what if you want a refund on someth9ng?
they occasionally sell baby items for £3 or under. (clothing). yesterday i got the chops a pair of slippers for £3.50 and was told i could exchange if they didnt fit.
what if they were under £3 and i got no receipt? There's someone in my head, but it's not me0 -
Does this mean that you can shoplift something for a pound or two and then claim that you weren't given a receipt yet you had paid for the items ?
More likely it means that some innocent person will be placed in the position of not being able to prove their innocence because no receipt was issued.
Considering that you would get a criminal record in that case and that you then would stand no chance of getting work again - since you have a dishonesty conviction - I feel that Woolworths are risking other people's reputations and livelihoods simply to save fractions of a penny on each transaction.qui tacet consentire -

Thanks for highlighting this Soo, I'll see what my local stores do, as I'm the same, will just pop in for a couple of drinks for the kids then put them in my bag, but I always ask for a receipt incase I get stopped in another shop.
As for not giving receipts if paying with cash - how would they know how you were paying before they put it all through the till? Would the receipt still come out and they refuse to give it to you? Sounds barmy to me!Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
ribboninthesky, when I paid yesterday no till receipt actually came out of the machine. When I stood my ground and insisted on a receipt they pressed some buttons and got me one. I did pay the exact money though and I'm wondering what would happen if you gave a £10 note for a £1 item, would you get a receipt then so you could check the change I wonder?
I'll always ask for a receipt, but I know my young sons won't as they will be embarrassed, yet they are the ones most likely to be stopped in another shop if they have something they apparently haven't paid for, as they tend to carry around a bottle of water in their hands.

You have a legal right to a written receipt upon request.
Woolworths cannot refuse to provide one, irrespective of value.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
I bought some school plimsols for the youngest on Thursday. Only £2 and gave correct money. The SA asked me if I would like a printed receipt. When I replied that I would, she just pressed a button and one popped out.
I can forsee this causing more problems for them when people return things. They can hardly insist that you produce a receipt for returns if they do not give one to you. Any low-value thing that I need to return exchange will now be going back to Woolworths if I cannot find the original receipt from the shop whre I actually bought it.[size=-2] If this post was unhelpful, please tell me.
